Collegiate Check-up
A pair of former Patriots competed recently at Anderson University's AU Runners Forum.
Joseph Vormohr, a 2006 Jay County graduate, turned in the top effort with a fourth-place finish in the shot put for the Hanover College men's track team. A state qualifier a year ago, Vormohr turned in a throw of 43 feet, 71/4 inches, just a half-inch short of finishing in the top three.
The freshman was fifth in his two other events. He finished at 123 feet, 1 inch in the discus and 115 feet, 7 inches in the hammer throw.
Nicole VanSkyock, who graduated from JCHS in 2004, competed in the 800-meter run for the host Ravens. She finished in ninth place at 2-minutes, 30.37 seconds.
The Anderson women finished second at the seven-team meet, and Hanover's men were sixth.
Sarah Schmitz
Fort Recovery - 2003
Helped the University of St. Francis softball team to a 6-5 victory Tuesday in the first game of a double-header against Concordia.
Schmitz finished the game 1-for-3 with a walk.
Jill Roughia
Jay County - 2005
Placed seventh in her lone individual event for the Huntington University women's track team at the March 30-31 Liberty Invitational.
Roughia turned in that effort in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2-minutes, 24.7 seconds. She was just over one second behind sixth-place teammate Lauren Davenport.
The sophomore also teamed with Michelle Kyler, Brittany Fillman and Katie Crandall for fifth-place in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:08.15.
Heath Williams
Jay County - 2004
Picked up another hit in the Manchester College baseball team's 9-5 victory March 31 over Rose-Hulman.
Williams finished 1-for-4 in the game. He also had five assists and four put outs.
Alyssa Johnson
Jay County - 2006
Helped the Taylor University women's track team to a fourth-place finish March 30-31 at the 16-team Emory Track and Field Classic.
Johnson finished 18th in the 1,500-meter run, posting a time of 5-minutes, 15.36 seconds.
Chad Keen
Jay County - 2005
Had one of five extra-base hits for the Ancilla College baseball team March 30 in its 21-17, 13-inning victory over Purdue North Central.
Keen ripped a double for the Chargers, who put up their big total with six runs in the first inning, five in the eighth and four to win the game in the 13th.[[In-content Ad]]
