Vormohr wins backstroke at state

INDIANAPOLIS - Anne Vormohr was the fastest backstroker this weekend at one of the fastest pools in the world.

Vormohr led an impressive effort by the Jay County Winter Swim Team in the Indiana Age Group State Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, winning the 11-12-year-old state title in the 50-yard backstroke. The team picked up 14 medals at the meet, including five apiece for Vormohr and Alex Bader.

In her state championship race, Vormohr finished with a time of 28.42 seconds. She was also the runner-up in the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 1.5 seconds, less than a quarter second away from earning a second state crown.

Vormohr posted three other top-eight finishes to earn state medals, taking third in the 200 individual medley, fifth in the 50 butterfly and sixth in the 50 freestyle.

Bader, Vormohr's cousin, picked up third-place finishes in four 9-10-year-old girls events - the 200 individual medley, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly and 50 breaststroke. She added a sixth-place effort in the 50 freestyle.

Sophie Bader picked up the other two medals for Jay County by placing seventh in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 100 freestyle.

Vormohr, Sophie Bader, Cori Stone and Ashley Mark finished seventh in the 11-12-year-old girls medley relay and eighth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Two other swimmers narrowly missed state medals at the meet with Cady Farlow taking 12th in the 13-14-year-old girls 200 breaststroke and Stone 12th in the 11-12-year-old 100 freestyle.

Other Jay County swimmers competing in individual events at the meet were Carley Stone (21st - 50 butterfly and 100 backstroke), Drew Lefever (32nd - 100 butterfly) and James Keen (50th - 100 butterfly).[[In-content Ad]]
