OSSIAN - Cori Vormohr wasted little time in declaring herself a sectional favorite.

Vormohr won a pair of events for the Jay County High School girls swim team at Saturday's season-opening Norwell Invitational, a meet that includes four of the teams the Patriots will compete against when they host the sectional tournament in February.

Jay County finished eighth at the nine-team meet with 81 points, and South Adams was fourth with 143.5. The host Knights dominated for 346.5 points to finish well ahead of second-place Oak Hill (179).

"I was pleased with the number of swimmers that were better than they were a year ago," said Arnold, whose squad could have finished a bit higher if not for a disqualification in the 200-yard freestyle relay. "But we've also got a lot of work to do and we're going to do that."

Vormohr was the only individual for Jay County or South Adams to finish in the top two in any event.

The junior cruised in the 100 butterfly by more than two seconds, finishing ahead of a pair of Norwell freshmen in 1-minute, 2.35 seconds. She won the 100 breaststroke by more than one second over Norwell freshman Stephanie Bussey at 1:13.66.

"Cori was just tenths away from her school record in the butterfly," said Arnold of the junior, who wasn't far off of her breaststroke mark either. "And she said she didn't feel like she was working real hard in the breaststroke. That's a good thing."

Vormohr also anchored the Patriots' next-best effort, a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay. She teamed with freshman Alysha Miller, sophomore Michelle Landfair and junior Briann Saxman for a time of 2:08.47.

The top finish for South Adams came in a relay event as it placed second to champion Norwell in the 400 freestyle event. Junior Jessica Sharp, sophomores Lauren Rich and Allison Beitler and freshman Erika Waugh teamed for a time of 4:15.74 to take the runner-up slot.

Sharp was the top individual for the Starfires, finishing third in the 500 freestyle at 6:18.28. She was fourth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:09.42.

"I think this was a great learning meet," said Starfire coach Janelle Gresla, who also had her top 200 freestyle relay team disqualified. "I think we're going to learn what it takes to swim as part of this team."

Landfair followed Vormohr with a pair of top-10 efforts for Jay County, finishing eighth in the 50 freestyle at 28.11 and ninth in the 100 freestyle in 1:03.42. Alysha Miller placed seventh at 1:13.66 in the 100 backstroke, and Briann Saxman was eighth behind Vormohr in the 100 butterfly in 1:17.42.

Saxman was the top Patriot in the 200 individual medley in 15th at 2:49.36, and Caitlin Ruchgy finished 15th in both the 200 freestyle (2:32.61) and the 500 freestyle (6:54.99).

"She did that a little at the end of last year and had some success with it," said Arnold of Ruchgy's desire to step into the distance events. "April Acker, being a diver, doesn't do much swimming and had two lifetime bests. That was exciting.

"Ivy (Simons) had a good backstroke. She was three seconds faster than she was a year ago at this time. She's starting off stronger."

Waugh turned in an encouraging opening performance for South Adams, posting a pair of top-five times. The freshman was fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:15.42, and placed fifth in the 100 backstroke at 1:11.31.

Rich, a sophomore, gave the Starfires another top-five effort as she placed fifth in the 100 freestyle in 1:02.21.

"We had some really good swims today," said Gresla, also noting freshman Alexia Fox's time of 1:15.08 for seventh place in the 100 butterfly. "She really came through for us."

Allison Beitler joined Rich for eighth place in the 100 freestyle (1:02.80), and Jansen Yoder was ninth in the 50 freestyle (28.3). Other top finishers in individual events for the Starfires were Sherri All in the 200 individual medley (14th - 2:48.49) and Deserae Kirchhofer in the 100 breaststroke (14th - 1:23.42).

South Adams relay teams finished sixth in the 200 medley and seventh in the 200 freestyle.[[In-content Ad]]
