Walks, errors crush Rockets in 8th (08/27/2008)
Portland Rockets
CANTON, Ohio - The Portland Rockets didn't allow a hit in the eighth inning. But that's when the host team scored all of its runs.
The Canton Stallions took advantage of a string of Rocket walks and errors Wednesday to beat Portland 3-0 in the opening round of the American Amateur Baseball Congress regional tournament.
With the game locked in a scoreless pitchers' dual between Jay County High School graduate Mitch Waters and Brian Boone, Canton drew a one-out walk in the eighth inning. Two errors followed to load the bases, and then Waters allowed two runs with back-to-back walks.
Cory Walradth entered the game and also walked in a run. Boone went the distance for the shutout to lead the Stallions.
Heath Williams and Cory Locke, both JCHS graduates, each had two hits for the Rockets (33-9).
Portland will play for its tournament life today at 2 p.m.
