Warriors eliminate South Adams (10/09/03)

South Adams got bumped out of action in the first round of the Allen County Athletic Conferene tournament Wednesday with an 18-21, 21-16, 21-14, 21-17 loss to the Woodlan Warriors.
Kelly Mertz topped the Starfires with 12 kills and 21 digs. She also had a pair of aces and one block.
LeeAnn Snyder followed with eight kills, and Robyn Habegger had 15 digs. Alyssa Miller put up 26 assists, Renee Neuenschwander had three aces and Kara Ross added a pair of blocks.
South Adams will host Huntington North Thursday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.
Chiefs split with HC
East Jay’s seventh grade volleyball team defeated Hartford City Wednesday 9-21, 21-81, 21-11, but the eighth grade team suffered a 16-21, 21-15, 21-8 defeat.
Sarah Byrum paced the seventh grade team (7-2) in the victory with 10 points. Shelby Rines had 11 points, including five aces, for the eighth grade team (7-2).
Challenge finale
The Jay Community Center 2003 Corporate Challenge concluded Sunday with the basketball shooting and 3-on-3 competitions.
The mixed team of City of Portland, Portland Forge Employees Federal Credit Union, Jay County Rural Electric Membership Corporation and Comprehnsive Mental Health Services (PPRC) won the men’s 3-on-3, women’s 3-on-3 and men’s shooting competitions to take the overall Corporate Challenge title with a team score of 147.
FCC (Indiana) was second overall with 119 points, and Moser Engineering edged Jay County Hospital for third by three points with 77.75.
Americare Living Center was fifth followed by First National Bank, W&M Manufacturing/Pier-Mac Plastics, Graphic Printing, Createc and Fortco Plastics.
In other events completed this weekend PPRC also took first in bowling. FCC won the volleyball competition, and Jay County Hospital was first in the women’s basketball shooting event.
Cruise in
The Fort Recovery Merchant Association and Fort Car Club will host a cruise-in Saturday. The event will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. in downtown Fort Recovery.
Joscie on TV
Fort Recovery senior Joscie Kaup has been chosen by Lima’s WLIO Channel 35 as the scholar athlete of the week. She segment will air Monday, Oct. 13 at 6 and 11 p.m.
Baseball tryouts
The D.C. Lightning baseball team for 10-year-olds is preparing for the 2004 season.
The team plays various area teams, as well as some from Kentucky and Ohio. Games are played under high school rules.
