Waters earns two more saves (04/29/06)
Collegiate Check-up
If the Manchester College baseball team is winning a game, it’s almost guaranteed Mitch Waters had something to do with it.
The Spartans are 26-6 on the year and Waters, a 2002 Jay County graduate, has earned six of those victories. He has also finished off eight games with saves, ranking him among the nation’s leaders in Division III.
Waters earned his eighth save Sunday against Ohio Northern. The game was a festival of offense before Waters tossed a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit while striking out two in the 16-13 victory.
He also had a save in Manchester’s 9-8 win over Franklin College April 22. He gave up one run on two hits in two innings.
The senior’s sixth victory of the year came in a 6-4, 10-inning win over Franklin April 22. He pitched the final 31/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits.
In addition to his win and save numbers, Waters still leads the team in ERA with a 1.96 mark. He has struck out 44 batters in 55 innings.
Jill Roughia
Jay County - 2005
Ran the second leg of a winning relay for the Huntington College women’s track team, which finished second at the Wilmington College Invitational April 22.
Roughia joined Lauren Davenport, Katie Crandall and Brittany Fillman for a time of 4-minutes, 5.71 seconds in the 4x400-meter relay as they beat the team from host Wilmington by just over one second.
She added a couple of solid efforts in her individual events, including a third-place finish in the 1,500 run in 5:06.45. She was fourth in the 800 run, just two tenths of a second out of the top three in 2:27.5.
Ben Freeman
Jay County - 2005
Placed third for the Polar Bear men’s golf team as it won as host of the four-team Ohio Northern University Invitational Sunday.
Freeman shot just an 84 in the opening round, which was sixth-best on the ONU team. But he bounced back for a 79 in the second round to finish in third place overall behind teammates Wes Immler (154) and Garrett Humes (160).
Sarah Schmitz
Fort Recovery - 2003
Helped the University of St. Francis softball team to a double-header sweep of Purdue-North Central in its final home game of the season.
Schmitz finished 2-for-3 in game two as the Cougars rallied from a 5-2 deficit. One of her hits was a double, and she also scored a run.
Nicole VanSkyock

Earned a top-three finish for Anderson University, which hosted the Pre-Conference Invitational April 22.
VanSkyock took third place in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2-minutes, 28.72 seconds. She finished behind a pair of runners from Ball State.

Williams also had an RBI in the 9-3 loss to Kalamazoo and a stolen base as the Chargers (14-19-1) fell 7-2 to Muskegon. He added a double in a 14-0 loss Thursday to Lake Michigan.
Chad Keen
Jay County - 2005
Pitched well again, but still couldn’t find the first win of his collegiate career.
Keen allowed two runs in the first inning for the Ancilla College baseball team, but gave up only one the rest of the way. He struck out seven and allowed just two hits, but still fell to 0-7 as Ancilla lost 3-1 to Kalamazoo.
Jenny Lehman
