Weaver honored by BSU alumni (01/12/06)

MUNCIE — The Jay County boys tennis season has been over for months. But that doesn’t mean the awards have stopped rolling in.

Patriot coach Barry Weaver was honored this week as the 2005 Ball State University Alumnus Boys Tennis Coach of the Year.

Weaver led Jay County to its best season in school history as the team set a new record for single-season wins by going 15-4. The Patriots also won Olympic Athletic Conference and sectional titles.

The award is voted on by all 32 BSU alumni who coach high school boys tennis in Indiana.

WJ 8th tops Rebels

DUNKIRK — West Jay’s eighth grade boys basketball team was in control throughout Wednesday night’s game, topping the visiting Randolph Southern Rebels 46-17. The Eagle seventh graders lost to Randolph Southern, 42-22.

Chris Landers led a well-distributed scoring effort for the West Jay eighth graders as he scored nine points. Josh Beaty added eight points, and Nathan Brown and Taylor Farmer each scored seven.

Zach Cash topped the scoring list for the seventh grade team with eight points. Six other players added two points apiece.

Chiefs score shutout

UNION CITY — East Jay’s sixth grade girls basketball team didn’t fool around in its first game. Not only did the Chiefs win their opener, but they shut out the host Union City Indians 40-0.

Mariah Hornaday led the East Jay domination with 10 points. Danielle Wellman followed with eight points and six rebounds, and LeAnn Horn had six points and four assists.

Kassie Hemmelgarn also scored six points, and Whitney Hapner had five rebounds.

East Jay also won the B team game 18-6 with Maria Murphy finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Tri Star winners announced

REDKEY — Dakotah Grove and Dakotah Chambers were among the winners at the Tri Star Basketball Contest held at Redkey Elementary recently.

Grove finished first in the 8-and-younger boys division while Chambers took the title for the 9-year-old girls.

Other winners on the boys side were 9-year-old Tanner Reynolds, 10-year-old Kyle Selvey, 11-year-old Caden Price, 12-year-old Dusty Rodgers and 13-year-old Dakota Steed. Cierra Barcus won for the 10-year-old girls, Jessie Beavers was first in the 11-year-old division and Kandas Miller took the 12-year-old crown.

The winners will compete in the Indiana North District Regionals at Jay County High School Feb. 19.[[In-content Ad]]
