Weaver leads Starfire victories (04/27/04)

Katie Weaver, Chelsea Minnich and Heath Lehman each had big days for the South Adams track team Monday, trumping those by Jay County leaders Alyssa Johnson, Jill Roughia and Paul Imel.

The Starfires topped the Patriots in the girls competition by a 71-53 score, and also took the boys battle 73-50.

Weaver continued her outstanding year in the sprints for the South Adams, winning both of her individual races. She was first in the 100-meter dash in 12.8 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 28.6.

Weaver, a freshman, also posted a victory in the long jump at 15 feet, 43/4 inches.

Minnich backed her up as the Starfires took five of the top six finishing spots in the hurdles.

Minnich was first in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.9, followed by Kaitlin Hoover and Whitney Sprunger. She also took the 300-meter hurdles in 53.1 with Sprunger in second.

Adding individual wins for the South Adams girls team were Sami Keen in the high jump at four feet, eight inches, Holly Yoder in the discus at 96 feet, nine inches and Stephanie Kruse in the shot put at 33 feet, six inches.

Johnson and Roughia each posted a pair of victories in the defeat for Jay County.

Johnson took care of the distance races, winning the 3,200-meter run in 12-minutes, 52 seconds. She edged the Starfires’ Haleigh Lehman by two seconds to win the 1,600-meter run in 5:43.

Roughia was first in the 800-meter run in 2:48. She also took the 400-meter dash in 1:05.

Jay County was first in the 4x800-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. South Adams took the 4x100-meter relay.

Imel stayed perfect in dual meets, racking up three more individual wins. The Patriots notched six individual victories to five for South Adams, but the Starfires grabbed wins in all three relays to take the team victory.

Heath Lehman was the only double-winner for South Adams as he took the two longest races. He was first in a 3,200-meter run sweep for the Starfires in 11:09.

Michael Lehman was second in 11:10, and Carson Sprunger was third in a matching time.

The same trio swept the 1,600-meter run, with Heath Lehman first in 5:07. Sprunger was second in 5:08, and Michael Lehman was third in 5:09.

Tim Conrad led yet another South Adams sweep in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.

Also picking up wins for the Starfires were Kyle Litwiller in the long jump at 19 feet, 103/8 inches and Darius Martens in the 300-meter hurdles in 46.0.

Imel took first in all three sprints, edging Litwiller in the 100-meter event and Adam Zimmerman in the other two. He was first in the 100-meter dash by three tenths in 11.0, the 200-meter dash by six tenths in 23.8 and the 400-meter dash by less than two seconds with a time of 55.6.

The Patriots took both throwing events, with Joseph Vormohr pacing a discus sweep with a toss of 144 feet, seven inches. Parker Houck was second at 138 feet, 11 inches and David Stith was third at 137 feet, six inches.

Stith was also first in the shot put at 49 feet, 103/4 inches.

Kyle Carpenter took the high jump at six feet, and Adam Grile was first in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.9.

The next meet for South Adams is at Adams Central Thursday against Adams Central and Bluffton at 4 p.m. Jay County will visit Muncie Burris Thursday at 5 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
