Weaver powers Stars (04/16/04)

Local Roundup

Katie Weaver has proven her point. Her first varsity meet was no fluke.

For the third time in three tries this year the freshman has won three events, leading the South Adams girls track team to victory with 85 points in a triangular meet against Wapahani and Union City Thursday.

Union City was second with 50 points, and Wapahani was third with 20.

The boys team got a couple of wins from Darius Martens as it won with 81 points. Wapahani was second in the boys competition with 41 points, and Union City scored 34.

Weaver has been outstanding thus far, having racked up nine individual wins in three meets. One of Thursday’s wins came in the long jump, which she took by more than a foot at 14 feet, 111/2 inches.

She was also the top sprinter once again, taking the 100-meter dash in 12.9 seconds. She added a victory in the 200-meter dash in 27.3.

Haleigh Lehman is not far behind her in terms of outstanding freshman efforts, having posted a pair of wins for the third straight meet.

Lehman completed the sprint sweep, taking the 400-meter dash in 1-minute, four seconds. She also won the 1,600-meter run by 25 seconds in a time of 5:42.

Erin Kruse and Holly Yoder led continued dominance in the throwing events.

Kruse was first in the shot put at 33 feet, five inches, with Stephanie Kruse second at 32 feet, 21/2 inches. Brittany Moser completed the sweep with a throw of 28 feet, 93/4 inches.

Yoder dominated the discus, winning by nearly 10 feet over teammate Robyn Habegger at 92 feet, 21/2 inches. Habegger was second at 82 feet, 81/2 inches, and Stephanie Kruse was third at 73 feet, two inches.

Kaitlin Hoover grabbed the only other individual win for the girls team, finishing first in the 100-meter hurdles in 17 seconds. The Starfires also won all three relays.

The boys team also took first in all three relays to back up the double-victory night by Martens.

Martens owned the hurdles, taking the 110-meter event in 17.6. His teammate Dustin Cressman was second in 18.1.

Martens was also the winner in the 300-meter hurdles in 46.0.

Heath Lehman took the lead role for South Adams in a domination of the 3,200-meter run, finishing in 10:48. Michael Lehman was second in 10:53, and Carson Sprunger was third in 10:59.

Phil Schmidt and Adam Zimmerman led a pair of one-two finishes for the Starfires.

Schmidt was first in the long jump, barely getting by teammate Kyle Litwiller. Schmidt’s winning jump was 18 feet, 11/4 inches while Litwiller went 18 feet, one inch.

Zimmerman edged Litwiller in the 400-meter dash in 55.7. Litwiller was just behind at 56.1.

Tim Conrad scored the only other win for South Adams as he took the 800-meter run in 2:09.

South Adams’ next meet is at home Thursday against Woodlan and Southern Wells at 5 p.m.

Starfires stumble

The South Adams baseball team dug a deep hole early and never got out in a 10-3 loss to the Fort Wayne Bishop Luers Knights Thursday.

The Starfires (3-2) gave up six runs in the first inning. They scored once in the second and twice in the third, but never came close to Luers in the loss.

Tyler Sprunger took the defeat as he survived just two-thirds of an inning. He gave up six runs on four hits while walking five.

Aaron Givens gave up three runs — two earned — in 51/3 innings of relief.

Givens had two hits and scored one run, and Craig Neuenschwander also had two hits.

Kyle White went 1-for-3 with a double and a run, and Kyle Neuenschwander singled and scored once.

South Adams will return to the diamond at home Saturday against Fort Wayne South Side at 11 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
