Wellman fans 11, but Pats fall to hosts


Billy Wellman struck out 11 in four innings for the Patriots Saturday but gave up 5 runs as host Mississinewa defeated Jay County's boys baseball team 7-3.

Wellman also doubled for the Patriots. Willie Mayfield, Nathaniel Brown, and Michael Daniels each had two hits for Jay County.

In the JV game, Jay County came away the winner, defeating Mississinewa 6-3.

JCHS ninth

Adam Gray led the Jay County High School boys golf team Saturday at the Yorktown-Players Club Invitational, shooting a 79 to finish in sixth place.

Jay County finished ninth overall, with the Yorktown Green team finishing first and Pendleton Heights second.

Chase Wellman shot a 97 for the Patriots. Adam Horn shot 103 and Brad Horn 105. A.J. Fuska shot 123 for the day.

The Patriots finished with 384, while Yorktown Green shot 317.

Cheerleaders chosen

Cheerleaders were chosen Saturday for Jay County High School for the 2009-2010 school year.

Varsity cheerleaders will be seniors Kyla Baldwin, Karin Hemmelgarn, Kami Hicks, Michelle Landfair, Rachel McKinley, Hannah Redwine, and Kristen Selvey; juniors Kristen Ainsworth, Melynda Brackman, Ashley Caupp, Erin Hunt, Alysia Mann, Jordan McMillan, and Megan Taylor; and sophomores Darian Barnett, Nikka Chaney, Jessi Chittum, Lyndee Evans, Nachelle Miller, Shelby Pryor, and Krista Taylor.

Junior varsity cheerleaders will be freshmen Jenna Barber, Alexis Cook, Stephanie Hudson, Makayla Jobe, Demi Lucas, Megan Price, Lauren Runkle, and Katie Snyder.

Mindy Weaver will continue as head cheerleading coach, assisted by Abby Champ and Joni Penrod.

Split a pair

Fort Recovery's boys varsity baseball team split a doubleheader with Riverside on Saturday, winning the opener 6-5 and falling 9-5 in the second game.

Frank Thien was the winning pitcher in the first game, which saw the Indians rack up 13 hits. Two of those hits belonged to Thien, who also stole two bases. Travis Hart had three hits, including a double for an RBI.

Nate Keller was credited with three RBIs for the Indians in the second game to provide most of the offense power. Riverside out-hit the Indians 8-5 in that game, which also saw Fort Recovery commit two errors.

The JV game was cancelled.

Fall twice

Fort Recovery's girls varsity softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader Saturday to Van Wert.

The Indians fell 9-0 in the first game, committing five errors, and lost the second game 8-3. The Indians connected for only five hits in the two games combined.

The JV game was cancelled.

Fifth and tenth

The Fort Recovery girls finished fifth and the boys tenth Saturday at the Fort Loramie Junior High Invitational track meet.

Top finishes for Fort Recovery's girls included a first in the 200-meter hurdles by Abby May and a second by her in the 100-meter dash.

Kelsey Fiely placed third in the high jump, and the 4x1 relay team of Elle Schoenherr, Kendra Tobe, Kelsey Fiely, and Abby May placed third.

Top finishes for Fort Recovery's boys included a first in the 800-meter run by Josh Pohl, who also placed second in the 1600-meter run.

Nathan Fullenkamp was third in the 1600-meter run.
