Wellman leads EJ 8th to victory (09/20/04)

PORTLAND — The East Jay football teams came away with a split Saturday as they hosted Huntington Riverview.

The eighth grade team shut out Riverview to stay perfect with a 14-0 victory. The seventh grade team slipped to 1-2 as it lost by a 26-16 count.

Billy Wellman and Adam Garringer got the scoring started for the eighth grade team, connecting on a 36-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Wellman then hit Garringer again for the two-point conversion.

The game score scoreless during the middle periods before Wellman found Lance Franklin on a 75-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

East Jay (3-0) got an outstanding effort from the defense, which included a blocked punt by Mitch Martyne which was recovered by Franklin. Adam Gray also had a fumble recovery.

The seventh grade team (1-2) led Riverview 16-14 at halftime, but failed to score after the intermission in the defeat.

Ben Vance put the Chiefs on the board in the first quarter with a 4-yard run. He also ran in for the two-point conversion.

Vance added another score in the second quarter on a 35-yard scamper. Adam Coats ran in for two points, but Riverview scored twice in the second half to take the win.

EJ girls, 7th boys win at Selma

SELMA — Kylie Wellman ran in front of the pack while Patrick Johnson finished second as they led the East Jay girls and seventh grade boys cross country teams to victories at the Selma Invitational Friday.

Wellman was 16 second better than anyone else in the girls race winning in 12-minutes, 10 seconds as East Jay scored 43 points. Delta was second with 89 points, and West Jay placed sixth with 153 points.

Johnson placed second in the seventh grade boys race — 14 seconds behind Caleb Coffin of Blue River in 11:03 — as the Chiefs posted 68 points. Delta was second with 101.

East Jay was also second in the eighth grade boys race with 62 points, behind Selma with 42. West Jay did not have enough runners for a team score in the boys races.

Tiffany Helms was third overall for the East Jay girls, finishing in 12:30. Kelly Weaver of West Jay was right behind her in fourth in 12:32, with the Eagles’ Kristen Selvey fifth in 12:33.

Cassie Laux was 11th for East Jay in 12:55, following by Leah Wellman in 12th one second behind. Katie Butcher rounded out the team score in 16th in 13:07.

Brittany Burris was the No. 3 runner for West Jay in 42nd with a time of 14:11, Whitney Henderson took 48th in 14:25 and Carly Weaver was 54th in 15:11.

Eric Homan followed Johnson in the seventh grade boys race as he placed fifth in 11:38. Jeremiah Cotherman was ninth for West Jay in 11:57.

Ben Brandt ran 15th for the Chiefs in 12:14, followed by Preston Roberts in 20th in 12:25 and Brad Horn in 26th in 12:44. Chris Mooney of West Jay finished one ahead of Horn in 25th with a time of 12:43.

West Jay’s Brady Mills was right behind Simmons in third place in 10:48 for the eighth grade boys.

Isaac Poole was next for East Jay in 11th in 11:26. He was trailed by Jordan Moser (14th in 11:30), Joey Franks (17th in 11:49) and Steven Kelly (18th in 11:55).[[In-content Ad]]
