Werst leads Starfires

BERNE — Jacob Werst’s two wins powered the Starfires.
The South Adams High School boys swim team scored 110 points Thursday to knock off Fort Wayne South Side (110) and Marion (88).
Werst finished first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 25.72 seconds for the Starfires, who finished the regular-season at 9-7. He also won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.15.
He was also part of two winning relays, joining Cory Sank, Mitchel Kaverman and Shad Swygart to take the 200 medley relay in 1:54.97 and teaming with Josh Dynes, Chris Inniger and Sank for first in the 200 freestyle in 1:46.11.
SAHS also swept the long distance events, with Dynes winning the 200 freestyle in 2:06.19 and Sank taking the 500 freestyle in 5:40.43.
Kaverman added a win in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.3.
Bruins top SA
HARTFORD CITY — South Adams’ boys basketball team struggled for the first three quarters Thursday in a 61-51 loss to the host Blackford Bruins.
The Starfires (5-11), who have dropped four of their last five, trailed by 16 after the third quarter before pouring in 29 points in the fourth to close the gap.
Scott Hoeppner hit five 3-pointers as he and Dustin Wanner shared the team high for SAHS with 17 points apiece. Wanner added five assists, and Matt Alig finished with five rebounds.
Trace Oswalt led four Bruins (5-9) in double figures with 21 points to go along with five rebound and three steals.
Kalup George totaled 12 points, and Blake Thiery and Andrew Mahan each added 10.
WJ falls to Jets
MONROE — The West Jay Middle School wrestling team suffered a 67-19 loss Thursday to the host Adams Central Flying Jets.
The Eagles came up with two pins, both of which came in the first period. Phil Newsome (135) finished his match in 1 minute, 14 seconds, and Matt Partlow (200) won in 1:23.
Jacob Gessaman (85) added a victory by a 9-1 decision, and Tristan Thrasher won 7-6.
Chief sixth wins
HARTFORD CITY — East Jay’s sixth grade boys basketball team knocked off host Blackford 24-13 Thursday.
Jade Smith, Caleb Manor, Noah Hummel and Collin Haynes each scored three points for the Chiefs. The team improved to 6-4 on the season.
In the B team game, Zaaron Lee scored six points as EJMS fell 23-15.[[In-content Ad]]
