West Jay boys split pair with Union City (11/28/03)

West Jay’s boys basketball teams hooked up with the Union City Indians for a couple of exciting contests Tuesday night, one deciding by a single point with the other going to overtime. The Eagle eighth grade boys suffered a 44-43 loss to Union City. The seventh graders came away with a 41-34 overtime victory.

Blake Price led the seventh grade team with 17 points as it led by 10 at halftime and after the third quarter. Union City put together a 14-4 run to end regulation, but the Eagles owned the overtime 8-1 to take the victory.

Price was trailed by Brady Mills with eight points and Bobby Springer with six. Ty Fullenkamp scored five points.

The eighth grade team (3-1) was up by three after the second and third quarters, but couldn’t hang on. Union City outscored the Eagles 16-12 in the final period to hand them their first loss.

Brandon Buckland paced West Jay with 11 points, and Kyle Cook had nine. Luke Goetz scored eight points, and Baxter Holdcroft contributed seven.

IHSAA events

The Indiana High School Athletic Association is hosting a couple events next week to kick off the celebration of its centennial.

Former UCLA basketball coach and Purdue graduate John Wooden will be speaking at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Wooden will speak about his “Pyramid of Success” and will participate in a question and answer session with audience members.

Admission to the event is $10, and all seating is general admission. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

The Centennial Dinner will be Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Warren Central’s Warrior Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Many of the state’s most famous high school athletes and coaches will be in attendance. There will also be an unveiling of sports-related submissions from the IHSAA/Hoosier Salon Centennial Art Contest.

Tickets for the dinner must be purchased in advance.
