West Jay downs Rebels (01/15/04)

Local Roundup

West Jay’s boys basketball teams controlled both games Wednesday to pick up a couple of victories. The eighth grade team scored at least 16 points in three quarters in a 57-38 win, and the seventh grade team picked up a 41-33 victory.

The Eagle eighth graders grabbed a 33-15 lead at haltime and cruised the rest of the way. They are now 10-4 this season.

Dustin Fox led a group of three players in double figures with 12 points. Luke Goetz and Brandon Buckland each scored 10 points.

Colton Bickel and Kyle Cook chipped in eight points apiece.

The seventh grade team evened its record at 7-7 as Blake Price set the pace with 18 points. Bob Springer finished with nine points.

High Rollers set record

The Jay County Blue Jay High Rollers bowling team had a record-breaking night Tuesday.

Jay County clobbered Marion — which had won a Baker format match between the two teams Saturday — by a score of 18-2 as it shattered the team’s previous records for team game score and total pins.

The High Rollers set the team game record with a 1,101-pin total in their first game Tuesday. They had a huge second game for a total of 2,132 pins.

The previous record for a single game was 1,016 pins, and the team had never broken 2,000 in a match.

Cory Mock led Jay County to it’s record with a high series of 488, which ranked second in team history. He rolled games of 255 and 233.

Jesse Shawver had the best game of his career with a 270 on the way to a 450 series. Summer Roush also had a personal-best game with a 233.

The junior varsity team finished in a 10-10 tie against South Adams, but lost the total pin tiebreaker 1690-1686. Still, both the total pins and the 851 second game were season highs for the JV squad.

Cody Wright had the best game (197) and series (388) for the JV team.
