West Jay seventh graders pick up win

DUNKIRK — A balanced effort keyed the West Jay Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team Tuesday as it knocked off Union City West Side 23-19. The eighth grade Eagles lost, 34-28.
Kyler Carvel and Daniel Meranda each scored eight points to lead the WJMS seventh graders (3-1). Phil Newsome added seven points, and Will Watson and Meranda each grabbed eight rebounds.
Nate Brackman scored 15 points in the defeat for West Jay’s eighth graders. Case Retter had six points and seven boards.
Fodrea named alternate
Nathaniel Fodrea was named as an alternate on the VI World Championship team after he and several other athletes from Portland’s Judan Judo competed in the Denver Classic and VI World Championship trials in Denver this month.
Fodrea finished as the runner-up in his division in the trials. Spencer Patterson brought home a Denver Classic championship, and Isabelle and Gabrielle Minnich each finished third.
Judan athletes also competed in the Women’s Championships in Bowling Green, Ohio, and the Red White and Blue Classic in Marion this month.
Kelsi Bostic picked up a victory at the Women’s Championships.

Payton Heniser, Nick Patterson, Spencer Patterson and Isabelle Minnich all finished in first place in the competition in Bowling Green. Mallory Aker, Crosby Heniser, Zack Wilhelm, Adam Wilhelm, Natalie Miles, Lindsey Aker and Gabrielle Minnich were second-place finishers, and Brayden Sprunger and Buell came in third.[[In-content Ad]]
