MUNCIE — Experience is hard to beat. And when it comes to the Muncie Central gymnastics sectional, no one has more championship experience than Hannah Williams.

The Jay County senior has been the star of the show for three seasons now, completing her run with four blue ribbons Saturday. She won her third consecutive all-around title, fourth straight floor exercise crown and was also first on the balance beam and the uneven bars to lead the Patriots to a second-place finish.

“I thought that I did the best that I have,” said Williams, who has won 11 sectional titles in her four seasons. “I did everything all together well, not just one thing.

Williams’ scores reflected as much, as she posted a career-best 37.225 all-around score, just 0.275 points off the Jay County school record. The team finished as the runner-up for the second straight season following titles in 2003 and 2004 with a 100.1, behind champion Huntington North’s 102.5. Delta, the 2005 champion, was third, just behind Jay with a 99.75.

Those three teams, along with Brittany Fisher of Muncie Southside and Blackford’s Laura Borgenheimer, will compete at the Huntington North regional Friday at 6 p.m. Fisher, second all-around with a 36.45, and Borgenheimer, six on the vault, were the only gymnasts outside of the top three teams to score among the top six in any event.

“Huntington was very good today,” said JCHS coach Kristin Millspaugh. “We saw them at Valpo, and I’ve seen scores, so I knew they were good, but they were probably even better than what we expected.”

Williams said she was happy with the way her teammates continued to perform well, even when scores may have been lower than they expected. Millspaugh echoed those thoughts.

“I’m really pleased with the routines we did today,” she said. “Scores on a couple of the events were a little lower than I expected, but I don’t know that they weren’t consistent with other teams. We finished the day right where we should have. The girls are happy.”

Dominant performances in the opening rotation set the tone for the day.

Huntington North opened on the vault and put up numbers no other team could hope to touch. Angie Baker’s 9.5 was the only score of the day to better Williams, and Kari Ricker and Alyssa Schnitz added scores of 9.2 and 8.6 respectively to give the Vikings three of the top five scores.

Their team score of 27.3 was two points better than any other team and made up most of their winning margin over Jay County.

At the same time, Williams was making sure no one would have a chance to take the floor exercise title she has held since the 2002-03 season. She hit everything, racking up a score of 9.55 which was well out of the reach of the rest of the field.

Fisher was the only other gymnast to break nine, scoring a 9.075.

Williams’ other victories over Fisher were closer as she avenged a loss to the previously undefeated Southside freshman from the dual-meet between the two teams earlier this season. She won the beam with a 9.475 and bars with an 8.9 while Fisher followed with scores of 9.35 and 8.825 respectively.

Williams was second on the vault with a 9.3 three with Fisher one tenth behind.

“She was solid as we’ve come to count on her being,” said Millspaugh of Williams, who was just returning from an ankle injury when the teams met earlier this season. “I think the difference right now between her and some of the other girls is just cleanliness. They’re throwing some difficult skills ... some of them just haven’t perfected those skills quite like Hannah has. She’s consistent. She’s solid as a rock most of the time.”

Erika Hunt was the only Jay County gymnast other than Williams to score in the top six on any event. She finished in a three-way tie for sixth with a 7.875 on bars.

Lacey Thornburg just missed joining the tie as she scored a ninth-place 7.825.

Kristin Brown was seventh on the floor with an 8.275, and eighth on the balance beam with a 7.6. Hunt took ninth on the beam with a 7.45, and Jenny Buckland placed 11th on the floor with a 7.8.

The Patriots settled for 14th (Kendra Homan - 8.05) and 16th (Hunt - 8.0) on vault, but Millspaugh said she was as happy on that event as any other.

“Scores didn’t show it, but Kendra nailed the best vault she’s ever done,” she said. “Erika landed a vault today that she’s never competed before. And she landed it twice.”

Joining Jay County, Delta, Huntington North, Fisher and Borgenheimer at next week’s regional will be the top three teams and top six individuals from the Fort Wayne Concordia sectional. No. 1 Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger won at Concordia with a 111.45 and was followed by Fort Wayne Snider (104.675) and Fort Wayne Carroll (104.4).

The top two teams and top six individuals in each event will move on to state competition.[[In-content Ad]]
