Win slips away from Starfires

MONROEVILLE — After giving up six runs in the first inning to Heritage, the South Adams softball team held the host Patriots scoreless for five innings.
The Starfires couldn’t keep them off the board for one more inning, losing 7-6 on a walk-off hit.
South Adams clawed back following the Patriots’ big first inning, scoring a pair of runs in the third and three in the fifth to get within one run. It would add one more to tie the game at six in the top of the seventh, but Heritage answered with the winning run in the bottom half of the frame.
Keirstyn Grimm led the Starfire offense with two doubles and an RBI. Maddie Morgan and Alaina Johnston both added two hits each, including one double. Lauren Smith also added a double, and Katelin Augsburger had an RBI single.
Johnston and Morgan both scored a pair of runs.
Abby Myers took the loss for South Adams, surrendering seven runs — one earned — on 10 hits while striking out three and walking one in six innings.

Bearcats blank Starfires
MUNCIE — The Starfires took two matches into a super tiebreaker Tuesday against the Bearcats. But the South Adams tennis team wasn’t able to come away with victories in a 5-0 loss to Muncie Central.
Maddie Graber won the first set at No. 2 singles against Sam Bartholome, but lost momentum in losing the second set and then the super tiebreaker 10-2.
At No. 2 doubles, Erika Miller and Autumn VonGunten of South Adams went down to the wire with Viveka Melo and Mikel Prater before falling 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.
Brittany Potts and Maddy Kloepper lost in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 3 singles respectively. Potts lost to Taylor Rabel 6-2, 6-1 and Sydney Clasby beat Kloepper 6-3. 6-2.
At No. 1 doubles, Kylea Pearce and Riley Liechty lost to Haley Osborne and Victoria Haller 6-3, 6-2.
The South Adams junior varsity squad tied with Muncie Central 5-5.

SA beats Warriors
BERNE — Bailey McIntire won three events and Drew LeFever took first in two Tuesday as the South Adams boys track team edged the visiting Woodlan Warriors 62-59.
Caroline Kloepper and Aleesha Goodwin led the Starfire girls to a 72-50 win.
McIntire placed first in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, and LeFever threw the furthest to win the shot put and discus events. Peter Amstutz picked up the other individual win, earning the top spot in the 400 dash.
Goodwin took first in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs, and Kloepper won both the 100 and 200 dash. Sydney Willis (400 dash) and Alli Amstutz (shot put) also had individual wins.
The Starfires also had the fastest time in the boys and girls 4x400 relay, and the girls also earned the victory in the 4x800 relay.
