Winter swimmers win Mid-State (02/07/05)

Jay County’s winter swim team won the Mid-State Conference Meet for the first time ever this weekend.

The Jay squad topped teams from Pendleton, Richmond, Connersville, Marion and host Oak Hill and will keep the traveling trophy until next year.

Anne Vormohr took first and Sophie Bader second in eight and under girls. Levi Hummel was first and Sok Vormohr third in eight and under boys. Cori Vormohr was third in 13 and over girls. Justin Klopp was first and Sam Miller third in 13 and over boys.

The team’s eight and under members traveled to Anderson Highland Sunday to compete in the Anderson Aquatic Club’s Eight and Under Meet of Champions.

The Jay team dominated the six and under girls division. Ashton Klopp took second, Brett Klopp third, Ashley Mark fourth, and Alex Bader fifth.

Sok Vormohr won first in the boys six and under age group. Anne Vormorh was second and Sophie Bader fourth in the seven-year-old girls division.

The team travels to Fort Wayne next weekend for the Three Rivers Aquatic Club’s Polar Bear Plunge Meet.

Second bracket

No. 2 seed Fort Recovery will face the winner of the match-up between No. 3 seed New Bremen and No. 4 seed Marion in the second bracket of the Division IV boys’ basketball sectional at Coldwater later this month.

Play begins at 6:15 p.m. on Feb. 22 when No. 5 seed New Knoxville faces No. 6 seed Waynefield in the first bracket.

Second bracket play will begin about 30 minutes after the end of the first game, with New Bremen and Marion facing off.

At 6:15 p.m. on Feb. 25, No. 1 seed Minster will take on the winner of the first bracket’s first game. Thirty minutes after that, Fort Recovery will face the New Bremen-Marion winner.

If Fort Recovery wins, it would move on to play the winner of Waynesfield bracket three at Wapakoneta on Tuesday, March 1.

3-of-4 advance

Three out of four of Fort Recovery Middle School’s basketball squads won their first-round tournament games and will play in second round competition this week.

The seventh grade girls knocked off St. Henry 36-18, led by Emily May who had 15 points. They’ll face Minster in the second round of the MAC tournament at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Fort Recovery Middle School gym. Delphos St. John and Versailles will play in the second game at 6:15 p.m.

Fort Recovery’s seventh grade boys will play at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Celina after winning the first round of Celina’s McKirnan Brothers Classic tournament by defeating Celina 35-20. Josh Wendel led Fort Recovery in scoring with 12 points.

The eighth grade girls won 33-20 to make their season record 12-2. They’ll face Parkway at 7:30 p.m. today at St. Henry Middle School.

New Knoxville ended the Fort Recovery eighth grade boys’ season in the MAC tournament 43-34. Wes Kahlig had 15 points for Fort Recovery in the loss.

Lady Stars lose

Bellmont’s Squaws rolled over the Lady Starfires Saturday, 63-32. South Adams dropped to 2-17 for the season. The Lady Starfires next face Woodlan in sectional play on Friday at Heritage. Jo Yoder and Erin McCollum led for South Adams with 7 points each. In the JV contest, Bellmont won 34-27.

Conditioning week

Though the Jay County High School track team won’t have its first actual practice until Monday, Feb. 14, this week will be conditioning week for the team, coach Greg Garringer said today.

Track team participants interested in toning up for the season sohould meet in the upstairs weight room at JCHS from 3:30 to 5 p.m. today through Friday.

Those participants who do not yet have a pre-season physical should get one as soon as possible, Garringer said.[[In-content Ad]]
