PARKER CITY — West Jay’s eighth grade volleyball team jumped above .500, winning for the second straight night Wednesday.

The Eagles defeated Monroe Central in a pair of close games, 25-22, 25-23. The West Jay sixth and seventh grade team took a 25-20, 25-13 defeat.

Keri VanSkyock paced the eighth graders as she racked up 12 points, six in each game. She finished with six aces and two kills.

Brittney Watson finished with five points, including three aces, and a pair of blocks. Brittany Muhlenkamp had three kills.

Breanna Dahlstrom scored nine points for the seventh grade squad. Winona Westlake scored five points, including two aces, and Emily Penrod had two digs.

Selvey takes first

MUNCIE — Kristin Selvey was the big winner Wednesday, leading the West Jay girls cross country team to a second-place finish at the Cowan Invitational.

Selvey, who was third at last week’s Selma Invitational, finished in first place. She crossed the finish line in 13-minutes, 28 seconds.

Macy Gerber followed Selvey in fifth place. Annelise Jetmore was 10th, Carly Weaver took 13th and Elizabeth Lennartz grabbed 14th place.

Chance Fuller was fifth for the sixth and seventh grade boys team, and Jeremiah Cotherman finished seventh in the eighth grade race. Wesley Price finished eighth in the sixth and seventh grade race, followed by Trey Auker in 10th and Zach Johnson in 18th.

Still riding high

ANDERSON — The most successful and lucrative season of his career as a professional jockey continues for Rodney Prescott.

Prescott, a Jay County native who lives near Cincinnati, ranks second in the nation in victories with 258 through racing Wednesday night, trailing only Russell A. Baze, who has ridden 286 winners. Prescott is the nation’s most active jockey with 1,439 races started so far in 2005. He has never finished in the top 10 in the nation in victories.

Prescott is currently riding at Hoosier Park in Anderson, where he is tied for the meet lead in wins (18) with Roberto Villafan. Prescott’s mounts have have earned $177,786 in 100 races so far during the meet, which began Sept. 3.

Live racing at Hoosier Park is held Wednesday through Sunday, with first post at 6:10 p.m.

Hall hits hole-in-one

Ken Hall turned in a hole-in-one Wednesday on the eighth hole at Portland Golf Club.

Hall used a 9-iron to ace the 129-yard, par-3 hole. The shot was witnessed by Jim Green, Jim Fairchild and Larry Epperson.

Chiefs defeat Driver

WINCHESTER — The East Jay eighth grade volleyball team defeated Winchester Driver Tuesday, 25-21, 25-22. The victory improved the Chiefs’ record to 4-4.

Becky Muhlenkamp had a big match as she totaled 15 points. Five of those came on aces.

Liz Walker had six points, including five aces, and two assists. Kelsey Wood finished with two digs and one block.[[In-content Ad]]
