WJ wins Monpelier tourney (01/10/04)

The West Jay eighth grade boys basketball team put together a nice weekend, winning a pair of games to take the Montpelier Tournament title.

The Eagles defeated Hartford City in the opening round 60-29 and got by Adams Central 40-31 in the championship game. The seventh graders split its games, losing to Montpelier 47-39 before topping Hartford City 34-31.

Brandon Buckland paced West Jay’s eighth graders in their rout of Hartford City with 19 points. Luke Goetz had eight points, and R.J. Fuller and Baxter Holdcroft each had seven.

In the title game Goetz scored eight points for the Eagles (9-4). Buckland finished with seven.

Blake Price topped the seventh grade team in both games with 25 points against Montpelier and 17 versus Hartford City. Alan Brown added 13 points in the victory over Hartford City.

High rollers fall

For the second straight match the Jay County Blue Jay High Rollers bowling team lost by way of the tie-breakers.

The High Rollers played Marion in 10 team games under the Baker format. Each team won five games, but Jay County lost the total pin tiebreaker 1918-1871.

Vormohr sets records

Cori Vormohr set a couple more team records, and several team members placed among the top finishers as the Jay County Winter Swim Team competed in the Robin Lindsey Memorial Swim Meet in Yorktown this weekend.

Vormohr placed in the top six in eight different 13-and-older girls events, including a two team-record setting efforts in the 400-yard individual medley in which she finished third and the 500-yard freestyle where she was fifth. She also placed third in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke.

She was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly, fifth in the 200-yard butterfly and the 50-yard freestyle and sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Justin Klopp added another new team record with his fifth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly. He was also fifth in the 100-yard butterfly.

Sam Miller had the best finish for Jay County as he took second in the 11-12-year-old boys 50-yard backstroke. He was also third in the 50-yard freestyle and the 50-yard breaststroke.

Emilee Miller placed sixth in the 9-10-year-old girls 100-yard butterfly.

Other top 10 efforts came from Daniel Velasco, Whitney Stipp, Kiley Lipps, Sophie Bader and Richard Osterholt.[[In-content Ad]]
