Yorktown knocks off Patriots

YORKTOWN — The Patriots trailed the defending sectional champions by just one at halftime. But they were unable to pull even after the break.
Jay County High School’s girls soccer team slipped back to .500 Thursday with a 4-1 loss to the Yorktown Tigers.
JCHS (6-6) fell behind as Yorktown scored twice in the first 19 minutes of the game. The Patriots closed the gap to one when Catherine Dunn scored off of passes from Gabbie Mann and Alex Loy at the 19:15 mark of the opening half.
Beverly Brittingham scored two goals for the Tigers (7-5) in the second half for the final margin as she completed a hat trick.
Gabbie Mann took five shots on goal for the Patriots. Brooke Reynard finished with six saves.
The JCHS junior varsity team got two goals from Cydney Huey in a 3-2 victory.

Wes-Del tops spikers
GASTON — Jay County’s volleyball team played close in each of the first two games, but still fell 25-22, 25-21, 25-13 Thursday to the host Class 1A No. 5 Wes-Del Warriors.
Hannah Ainsworth finished with 11 assists, 10 digs, four service points and three kills to lead the Patriots (4-13). Bre McIntire had six kills and five service points, and Malarie Houck totaled eight digs and three kills.
Rachel Ferguson scored five service points, Kylie Osborne had three kills and Courtney Finnerty added three aces.
JCHS dropped the junior varsity match 25-15, 25-11. Mallory Marshall had two service points, both on aces, and two digs, and Finnerty finished with three service points and two kills.

Boys soccer blanked
The Patriots struggled to mount much of an offensive attack Thursday as they fell 1-0 to the visiting Marion Giants.
Marion scored the lone goal of the game in the opening half. The win improved the Giants to 9-1-1 with the win.
Jay County finished with just three shots on goal, two of which came from sophomore Alex Abbott. Alex Dunn added one.
Kyle Dirksen made 11 saves as he went the distance in goal for the Patriots (6-7).

EJ runners dominate
RICHMOND —
East Jay Middle School’s girls cross country team dominated host Dennis 15-50 on Thursday. The boys team won 21-35.
Sydney Mathias finished in 12 minutes, 35 seconds, to win the girls race for the Chiefs, who swept the top eight spots. Breea Liette was the runner-up in 12:42 followed by Alex Bader (12:44), Erika Kunkler (12:53) and Kendra Muhlenkamp (13:03).
Alex LeMaster won the boys race for East Jay in 11:24, and Skylar Myers was second in 11:36.
Trevor Moeller placed fifth in 12:18 ahead of Dustin Bricker (sixth – 12:21) and Tim Hein (seventh – 12:24).

Eagles 2-1 vs. MC
DUNKIRK — The West Jay Middle School seventh grade volleyball team defeated the visiting Monroe Central Golden Bears 25-18, 25-19 Thursday, and the sixth grade team won 25-16, 25-19. The eighth graders suffered a 20-25, 25-23, 15-9 defeat.
Kady Finnerty paced the WJMS seventh graders with 11 service points. Chloe Trissel added six.
Karlie Bullard scored nine points, including six in the second game, for the sixth grade Eagles. Kameron Edwards added eight points.
Courtney Cox finished with six service points, including two aces, to pace the eighth grade team. Kaity Grady also scored six points.

Crouch, Trewyn lead
DUNKIRK — West Jay’s eighth grade football team stayed undefeated with a 14-0 victory Thursday over Wilson (Muncie). The seventh grade game ended in a 20-20 tie.
Justin Crouch hit Andrew Trewyn on a 62-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter for the Eagle eighth graders (3-0), and the pair connected again on a 15-yard TD in the second. Bowen May ran in for a two-point conversion, and Jacob Geesaman made six tackles.
Cole Stigleman scored all three touchdowns for the WJMS seventh grade squad (1-0-2) on runs of 9, 6 and 4 yards. He finished with 79 yards on the ground, and made three tackles.

Chief spikers split
RICHMOND — The East Jay seventh grade volleyball team scored a 25-6, 25-24 victory Thursday over host Dennis. The eighth graders lost 25-21, 25-11.
Irene Braun and Elizabeth McDowell each had seven service points and seven aces as the seventh grade Chiefs improved to 4-8. Amanda Hilty finished with two kills.
Britlyn Dues had five kills and four digs for the eighth graders (9-4). Lizzy Schoenlein added 10 assists and two digs.[[In-content Ad]]
