Swimmers set new records

WESTFIELD — Jay County High School’s girls swim team kicked off its season in record-breaking fashion.
Alex and Sophie Bader contributed to three new records as the Patriots placed third Saturday in the Kristin Rice Westfield Invitational.
Jay County’s 417 points trailed only Fishers (604) and host Westfield (491).
The Bader sisters teamed up with their cousin Anne Vormohr and Katy Smeltzer to set a new pool record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 51.19 seconds.
Sophie Bader, a junior, then went on to set a new JCHS record in the 200 individual medley in 2:12.87 while finishing third behind Fishers teammates Lauren Edleman (2:04.35) and Maggie Jahns.
In her first high-school competition, Alex Bader, a freshman, set a new Patriot mark in the 100 breaststroke with her first-place time of 1:06.67.
Vormohr also took first in the 100 backstroke, then joined the Baders and Smeltzer to also take first in the 200 freestyle relay.
Also earning top-eight finishes were Sydney Mathias (seventh — 50 freestyle), Ashley Mark (eighth — 100 freestyle), Jamie Valentine (seventh — 100 breaststroke), Smeltzer (seventh — 200 freestyle), Vormohr (second — 50 freestyle), Sophie Bader (second — 100 butterfly) and Alex Bader (second — 100 freestyle).
The Patriots also placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay.

BERNE — The South Adams girls basketball team overcame a fourth-quarter surge to beat the visiting Union City Indians in overtime on Saturday, 61-52.
After a slow start, the Starfires (1-2) rallied to get within one, 23-22, at halftime. They took a five-point lead after three quarters, but the Indians (1-1) scored 18 points in the final eight minutes to send the game into extra time.
South Adams held Union City to just four points in overtime.
Junior Sydney Willis led South Adams with 24 points, including three 3-pointers. Cindy In’t Groen chipped in with 10 points as the only other Starfire to reach double figures.
Lexi Dellinger totaled nine points, and Mackenzie Jennings had seven.
Union City’s Courtney Wise led all scorers with 30 points.
