Jay County sees title slip away

MONROEVILLE — The Jay County High School volleyball team was one victory away from securing the school’s first Allen County Athletic Conference championship.
After rallying from a two-game deficit Thursday, the Patriots weren’t able to win the fifth in a 25-16, 27-25, 18-25, 13-25, 15-8 loss to the host Heritage Patriots.
Jay County (19-5) falls to 5-2 in the ACAC and out of a first-place tie with Adams Central and Leo.
Kylie Osborne and Abby Barcus each had 18 kills to lead the Patriots, and Abby Wendel chipped in with eight kills and 21 digs.
Lizzy Schoenlein was a perfect 14-for-14 from the service line, tallied 41 assists and had four kills.
The Patriot junior varsity team beat Heritage, 25-19, 25-14.
Emilie Walter had seven points and three blocks, Audrey Shreve chipped in five kills and Katie Lyons had five assists. Britlyn Dues notched four aces and a pair of kills in the win.
Jay County hosts the Patriot Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday, and then travels back to Heritage at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday to take on Southern Wells in the opening round of the ACAC tournament.
Jay boys win
ANDERSON — The Patriot boys soccer team closed out its 2014 regular season with a 2-1 victory over the host Liberty Christian Lions.
Alex Abbott scored his 16th and 17th goals of the season. Abbott notched his first score of the game in the opening half on an assist from Zach Chaney, and the JCHS senior put the Patriots (5-8-1) ahead 2-0 in the second before the Lions broke the shutout.
Jay County opens the sectional tournament at 5:30 p.m. Monday against the Delta Eagles at the Yorktown Sports Park.
Tigers top Tribe
FORT RECOVERY — Once the Indians got the Tigers figured out it was too late.
Division III No. 1 Versailles ran over the Fort Recovery volleyball team, 25-8, 25-13, 25-18.
Tori Lennartz and Kendra Siefring both had five kills for the Indians (8-11, 1-6 Midwest Athletic Conference).
Rachel Pugh tallied seven digs and Cassidy Rammel had eight assists.
Jets dim Stars
BERNE —The South Adams volleyball team lost the battle of Adams County teams, falling to the Class 2A No. 6 Adams Central Flying Jets, 25-12, 25-12, 25-14.
Morgan Alberson had four kills and three aces for the Starfires. Caralie Farlow, Kylie Grabau and Cindy In’tGroen all notched three kills, while Farlow tallied eight digs and Kylea Pierce had seven digs. Julia Grabau had a dozen assists.
The Starfires’ junior varsity team won 25-20, 25-21.
Madi Wurster recorded nine kills, Sydney Pierce had eight digs and Chastity Guereca notched 14 assists.
SA girls routed
MARION — The South Adams girls soccer team was at the wrong end of a 9-0 score on Tuesday.
The host Eastbrook Panthers scored all nine goals in the first half, and limited the Starfires (4-11) to just three shots on net.
Tori Reiley, Virginia Lagos and Jade Jauregui each had one shot on goal, and Jauregui made eight saves.
Cassie Yoder also had a pair of saves in the loss.
