Fort Recovery climbs to sixth in poll

FORT RECOVERY — The success of the Fort Recovery High School football team is being acknowledged outside of Mercer County.
The Indians (5-1, 3-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) climbed two spots to No. 6 in the Division VII Associated Press poll this week.
Fort Recovery, which is 5-1 for the first time in program history, jumped from eighth thanks to losses by previously undefeated Berlin Center Western Reserve and Arlington.
The Indians, who are seeking their first playoff appearance, received 114 points from AP voters, 23 behind Norwalk St. Paul and 13 ahead of Western Reserve.
Defending Division VII state champions Marion Local is the top-ranked team for the sixth-straight week, ahead of Glouster Trimble and Shadyside. Caldwell is ranked fourth.

Starfires advance
FORT WAYNE — Madison Morgan wasn’t ready to let her season come to an end.
After the Whitko Wildcats tallied the game-tying goal four minutes into the second half, the South Adams junior scored for the second time seven minutes later.
The go-ahead score gave the Starfire girls soccer team a 2-1 victory Monday in the opening round of the Class A Sectional 27 tournament at Fort Wayne Soccer Club.
South Adams (5-12) advances to the semifinal game against Blackhawk Christian, which beat Concordia 1-0 in the other opening round match Monday.
Alexis Dellinger assisted on both of Morgan’s goals, and Jade Jauregui had four saves in net for the Starfires.
South Adams is looking for its first sectional title in program history.

Bears sweep Chiefs
PARKER CITY — The East Jay Middle School volleyball teams traveled to take on the Monroe Central Golden Bears, and all three returned with losses.
The EJMS eighth graders lost 8-25, 25-14, 15-13, the seventh graders fell 25-4, 25-23 and the sixth grade Chiefs were defeated 22-25, 25-19, 15-8.
Sarah Walter and Maggie Pryor led the EJMS eighth graders with 10 and nine service points respectively, and both tallied six aces. Walter also added six kills and Pryor had five digs. Hanna Dillon notched four points.
For the seventh grade Chiefs, Britney Mullins and Logan Poore both had four points, and Sara Hemmelgarn totaled three points and two aces. Macey Weitzel notched three kills.
Natalie Miles notched six aces while serving the East Jay sixth graders to seven points. Pacie Denney had six points and three aces, and Alana Kunkler and Ashlyn Dow each tallied four points.

Fort grad honored
ADA, Ohio — Jackie (Kaup) Briscoe was elected to the Ohio Northern University Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.
Briscoe, a 1998 Fort Recovery High School graduate, was a three-sport athlete at ONU as a member of the volleyball, diving and track teams.
She earned All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors in all three sports, and was a two-time All-American in the high jump. She was also given the Clyde Lamb Award as ONU’s top female student athlete.
Briscoe graduated from ONU as the school’s all-time digs leader and currently stands fifth with 1,616, and is the record-holder with 11 service aces in a match.
Kaup went on to coach volleyball for the Indians and was a volunteer assistant track coach.
