Jay volleyball improves to 16-3

HARTFORD CITY — Jay County’s volleyball team won its 16th match of the season Monday, defeating the host Blackford Bruins, 25-11, 25-14, 25-23.
Kylie Osborne had a team-high 11 kills, and served the Patriots (16-3) to 15 points. Abby Wendel and Abby Barcus both added eight kills, and Wendel had one block. Lizzy Schoenlein tallied 31 assists and 10 digs.
The junior varsity Patriots also beat the Bruins, 25-10, 25-13.
Hanna Ault led Jay County with five kills and five aces, and Britlyn Dues notched four aces.
Alli Campbell and Kady Finnerty both had seven assists, and Kaelyn Weaver and Audrey Shreve recorded four kills each.

Patriots down Bruins
HARTFORD CITY — The Patriots and Bruins were deadlocked at 2-2, with only the No. 2 singles match left to play.
After dropping the second set 6-1, Jay County senior Alex Krieg beat Scott Thompson in a 7-1 tiebreak, winning the match 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7-1) to give the visiting Patriot tennis team a 3-2 victory over Blackford on Monday.
Zach Pryor defeated Jordan Elliot at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1, and at No. 3 singles Alex Clark beat Kobe Peden 6-2, 6-4, giving Jay County a sweep in the singles matches.
At No. 1 doubles, Jay County’s Adam Jutte and Jay Houck lost to Blake Thiery and Stephen McGahey 6-0, 6-1, and at No. 2 doubles Sok Vormohr and Garrett Rodgers fell to Zach Tarr and Kerigan Reynard, 6-4, 6-4.

WJ runners win
DUNKIRK — The West Jay Middle School boys and girls cross country teams both beat the visiting Blackford Bruins on Monday.
Daniel Fugiett was the overall winner for the boys team, which beat the Bruins 22-33. Mathew Paquette finished second, and Ian McCombs and Ethan Andreshak were back-to-back in fourth and fifth. Logan Brown was 10th, and Reece Bowen placed 11th.
For the WJMS girls, Sophie Fugiett, Lexus Harding and Lilly Clemmons were second, third and fourth respectively. Catherine Stafford crossed the finish line in seventh, and Jaden Roser was ninth. Blackford did not qualify for a team score.

Chiefs fall to Eagles
MUNCIE — All three East Jay volleyball teams traveled to Delta on Monday, and all three left with losses.
The Chief eighth graders fell to the Eagles, 19-25, 25-12, 25-7. East Jay’s seventh graders lost 25-14. 25-7, and the sixth graders fell 25-15, 25-18.
Kailee Denney led the eighth graders with eight points and two aces. Sarah Walter and Olivia Kunkler both had two kills, and Maggie Pryor tallied 13 digs.
Macey Weitzel had a team-high nine points for the EJMS seventh graders, and added two aces. Elyse Bost had four kills and two digs, and Britney Mullins also notched a pair of digs.
Alana Kunkler and Lexie Ferguson both had five points for the sixth grade Chiefs. Natalie Miles and Ferguson each tallied two aces.
