Patriot netters struggle at Leo

LEO — Jay County’s boys tennis team had a tough time with the Leo Lions on Thursday.
The Patriots weren’t able to win a game.
At No. 1 singles, Leo’s Eli Steiner beat Zach Pryor 6-0, 6-0, and Patriot senior Alex Krieg fell at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0 to Reid Herran. Alex Clark, the Patriots’ No. 3 singles player, lost to Tyler Christlieb, 6-0, 6-0.
Jay County’s No. 1 doubles team of Adam Jutte and Jay Houck lost to Dustin Lukemire and Isaac Brandenberger, 6-0, 6-0. Leo’s Drake Lomont and Evan Roth defeated Sok Vormohr and Garrett Rodgers at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-2.
The Patriots host the sectional tournament, which begins at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The bracket will be determined Monday.

JC falls to Tigers
YORKTOWN — In a rematch of the 2013 girls soccer sectional final, the Yorktown Tigers got some revenge with a 3-1 victory over Jay County.
Gabbie Mann scored the lone goal for the Patriots, who topped Yorktown 1-0 for the sectional title last season, pushing her season total to 21. Mann had seven of Jay County’s 18 shots on goal, and Emma Laux added three.
Lilly Rogers notched 17 saves in goal for Jay County (5-6), which is now 1-1 this season against sectional rivals. The Patriots beat Delta 5-0 on Tuesday, and are set to play their other sectional opponent, Muncie Central, at home on Thursday.
Jay County will host Blackford at 5 p.m. Tuesday for senior night.

WJ spikers beat Bears
DUNKIRK — The West Jay Middle School eighth grade volleyball team improved to 6-2 on the season with a two-game win Thursday against the visiting Monroe Central Golden Bears.
Randi Ferguson had 10 service points, leading the Eagles to a 25-22, 25-18 win. She tallied one kill and one ace.
Molly Ault and Rhegan Shimp both had five points, with Shimp recording three aces. Gracie Miller and Kendal Garringer had four points each, and Kameron Edwards and Garringer also notched two kills apiece.

EJ boys, girls win
RICHMOND — The East Jay Middle School boys and girls cross country teams both beat the host Richmond Red Devils on Thursday.
The girls squad won 21-36, and the boys won 25-33.
Kendra Muhlenkamp was the overall winner for the girls, finishing in 11 minutes, 33 seconds. Miranda Alig and Kristie Alig follwed her in third and fourth places respectively.
Cheyenne Liette (sixth) and Jocelyn Reed (seventh) also scored for the Chiefs.
Tayler Smeltzer (11:16) and Skylar Myers finished second and third to lead the EJ boys. Mason Winner was fifth, Braden Sprunger placed seventh and Yuri Miyatsu finished eighth.

Chiefs sweep Raiders
East Jay’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams swept the visiting Southern Wells Raiders on Thursday.
The EJMS eighth graders won 25-7, 25-19, and the seventh graders earned a 25-16, 25-20 victory.
Hanna Dillon paved the way for the East Jay eighth graders, compiling 12 points and five aces. Olivia Kunkler also had five aces
Macey Weitzel totaled seven points — all aces —and had six kills for the seventh grade Chiefs.
