Jay County remains Class 4A
INDIANAPOLIS — With the exception of two sports, Jay County High School will remain a Class 4A school.
In the new classifications announced Tuesday by the IHSAA for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years, Jay County’s enrollment of 1,108 keeps it in 4A for boys and girls basketball, football and volleyball.
The Patriots will drop to Class 3A for both baseball and softball. In boys and girls soccer, they will continue to be in Class 2A.
South Adams, which has an enrollment of 390, will move up to Class 2A in football and will be the smallest school in its class. The Starfires have won back-to-back sectional titles and a regional title in 2014 while in Class 1A.
Jay County is the third smallest Class 4A school in boys basketball. Only Kankakee Valley (1,094) and Guerin Catholic (738) are smaller. Kankakee Valley was bumped up because of enrollment, and Guerin Catholic, which defeated Griffith on Saturday for the Class 3A state championship, moved up because of its tournament success factor. New Palestine, with an enrollment of 1,094, is the largest 3A school after it dropped from 4A.
The Patriots are also the third smallest school for girls basketball, ahead of Kankakee Valley and New Palestine.
Jasper, which has 29 fewer students than Jay County, is the largest 3A school.

In volleyball, only Brebeuf Jesuit (760) and Concordia (739) have fewer students than Jay County. They were moved to 4A from 3A because of their tournament success factor.
Football is the only sport with six classifications, and the Patriots are 34th out of 64 schools in Class 4A in terms of enrollment. New to Class 4A are Delta — which moved up from 3A because of enrollment — Richmond and Wayne, which fell from 5A. Norwell, which was in Jay County’s sectional, also dropped to 3A. This will likely bring a change to Jay County’s sectional, and those groupings will be announced in May.
For baseball and softball, Jay County will be the largest Class 3A school, with Connersville (1,112) as the smallest 4A school. Because of the new classifications, the Patriot baseball and softball teams will be in new sectionals as well.
South Adams will continue to be a Class 2A school in boys and girls basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball.
