Jay County’s softball team gave up a late run on an illegal pitch and wasn’t able to push across the tying in the final two innings in a 4-3 loss Thursday to the Delta Eagles.
Delta struck for three runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Jay County (4-5) answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame.
Kaili Baughman, Kady Finnerty and Chloe Trissel all had RBI hits for the Patriots in the inning, with Trissel recording her first career RBI.
Catherine Dunn, Gabby Hart and Randi Auker also tallied hits.
Larissa Boles took the loss, scattering four hits while striking out five and giving up three earned runs.

Jay netters drop opener

BLUFFTON — Jay County High School’s girls tennis team lost its opening match in the Allen County Athletic Conference to the Bluffton Tigers on Thursday, 3-2.
Jessica Kerrigan and Kyra Braun won the only two matches for Jay County (1-1, 0-1 ACAC). At No. 1 singles, Jessica Kerrigan defeated Molly Williams 6-2, 6-4, and Braun beat Lauren Stauffer at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 7-5. Bluffton’s Madison Meyer defeated Michelle Wellman at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
The Patriots’ No. 1 doubles team of Emily Westgerdes and Faith Parr lost to Sarah Baumgartner and Claudia Williams 6-1, 7-5. Abby Reier and Abby Saxman also lost at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 7-5 to Madison Heller and Lexi Ramseyer.
Jay County’s junior varsity squad won, 5-4.
 

JC loses first dual
FARMLAND — The Jay County boys golf team dropped its first dual match of the season Thursday at Hickory Hills Golf Club.
The Wapahani Raiders had four players shoot 46 or better for a team score of 172. The Patriots shot 192.
Jay Houck and Graham Haines led Jay County with matching scores of 46. Both players converted two pars. Houck shot even on the par-4 14th and the par-5 16th, while Haines did the same on 16 and also the par-3 10th.
Kyler Hudson and Collin Haines both turned in scores of 50 to round out the Patriots’ team score. Nick Hayden also competed, shooting a 52 in his first varsity match.
Wapahani’s Connor Hensley led all players with a 42.
Ian James and Auston Rittenhouse shot a 50 and 64 respectively for the Patriots’ JV team.

Tribe boys, girls 3rd
COLDWATER — Fort Recovery’s boys and girls track teams both placed third Thursday in a three-team meet at Coldwater.
The host Cavaliers won both meets, with the girls scoring 104 points to run away with the victory. Parkway was second with 39 points, and the Indians scored 29 points for third.
Coldwater’s boys scored 98 points for first place, with Parkway finishing second with 65.5. Fort Recovery scored 11.5 points.
Tyler Acheson earned the only victory for either Tribe team, placing first in the shot put. Travis Sutter finished third in the 3,200-meter run.
Alyssa Post, Emily May and Kiah Wendel were three members of two runner-up relay teams. The trio joined Lauren Gehle in the 4x100 relay, and teamed with Brittany Jutte in the 4x200 relay. Post was also runner-up in the 100 hurdles.
Alexis Hobbs, who also finished third in both the 100 and 300 hurdles, joined Paige Hemmert, Angela Heitkamp and Caitlyn Huelskamp to place second in the 4x400.

Knights top Stars
OSSIAN — The South Adams softball team fell to .500 on the season with a 6-2 road loss Thursday to the Norwell Knights. 
The Knights scored three runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth before South Adams (2-2) finally broke through. Starfire senior Loren Sparks drove in a pair of runs on a double in the top of the sixth to make it 5-2, but Norwell added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame.
South Adams left eight runners on base, seven of which were in scoring position.
Alaina Johnston, Maddie Morgan and Sparks all had a pair of hits, with Sparks smacking a pair of doubles. Kierstyn Grimm and Cindy In’t Groen scored the only runs for South Adams.
