Back, Moore win at HU invite
Hannah Moore made the most of her time on her home track. And Tyler Back enjoyed the Huntington University throwing facilities.
Both athletes won an event Saturday, and Back broke a school record, as they led a group of three local graduates who competed at the Huntington University Invitational.
Back, a 2013 Jay County High School graduate, led a Grace College sweep of the shot put ahead of teammates Macallister Seitz and Jacob Brown. He had a winning throw of 43 feet, 9 1/4 inches.
The sophomore broke the Lancers’ record in the hammer throw at 143 feet, 4 inches. He finished in second place.
Moore (South Adams – 2012) dominated her only event of the day for the Foresters, winning the 3,000-meter run in 10 minutes, 51.52 seconds.
She was nine seconds ahead of runner-up Mary Brokaw of St. Francis.
Tim Lehman (South Adams – 2012) also competed at the meet for Goshen College, taking fourth place with a time of 50.56 in the 400 dash. He was also part of Maple Leaf relay teams that finished fourth in the 4x400 relay and fifth in the 4x100 relay.
All three athletes also competed April 10 and 11 at the Indiana Little State Championships at Indiana Wesleyan, with Back placing eighth in the shot put at 46 feet, 4 inches.
He was 15th in the hammer throw (140 feet, 6 1/2 inches) and 24th in the discus (108 feet, 6 3/4 inches).
Moore finished the 5,000 run in 18:39.18 for ninth place, and Lehman had a time of 51.56 to take 13th in the 400 dash.
Dylan Cope
Jay County – 2013
Also competed at the Indiana Little State Championships, turning in a top-10 finish for the Indiana University East men’s team in the 800-meter run.
Cope edged Huntington’s Antonio Castillo by one hundredth of a second for seventh place in the 800 run in 1 minute, 57.24 seconds. He was also 21st in the hammer throw at 110 feet, 1½ inches.
Zane Shreve
Jay County – 2014
Finished second in the decathlon for the host Miami University RedHawks at the All-Ohio Track and Field Championships April 10 and 11.
Shreve scored 5,435 points, helping the RedHawks to a second-place finish. Shreve was runner up to Rio Grande’s Floyd Lowry, who scored 5,594. The Miami freshman placed first in both the high jump and the pole vault, jumping 6 feet, 1/2 inch and clearing 10 feet, 4 inches respectively.
Collin Affolder
South Adams – 2014
Tallied a season-best three hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Bethel College baseball team in its 5-4 loss in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday against Marian University.
The freshman also had one hit in game one, a 5-3 loss to the Knights.
Affolder had two hits, two runs and one RBI on Tuesday, as the Pilots (12-24, 8-16 Crossroads League) split a doubleheader with Huntington University.
Eme Miller
Jay County – 2012
Led the Defiance College women’s track team Saturday at the Polar Bear Invitational hosted by Ohio Northern.
Miller took first place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19 minutes, 27.23 seconds, finishing nearly 15 seconds ahead of the field. She also placed ninth in the 3,000 steeplechase in 11:53.24 at the All-Ohio Division III Championships at Ohio Wesleyan.
Drew Houck
Jay County – 2011
Competed for the Indiana University East men’s golf team Friday and Saturday at the Pilot Invitational hosted by Holy Cross.
Houck opened with an 86 in the tournament at Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend. He added a second-round 82 as the Red Wolves finished tied for seventh out of nine teams.

Made is collegiate debut April 15 for the Huntington University baseball team in a 3-2 win against the Taylor Trojans.
The freshman entered as a defensive replacement at second base, and went hitless in one at-bat with one putout. Three days later he tallied three assists at shortstop in a 10-0 win against Goshen College.
