Jay County High School’s boys tennis team dropped its season opener Thursday.
The Patriots lost to the visiting Norwell Knights, 5-0.
JCHS junior Jay Houck won the first set of his No. 2 singles match 6-2 against Brock Werling, but lost the final two by the same score to drop his first career individual match. He spent the last two seasons as a doubles player with 2015 graduate Adam Jutte.
The Patriot No. 2 doubles tandem of junior Luke Weaver and sophomore Evan VanCise also won their first set but were unable to take a game in the final two. Norwell’s Andrew Mater and Duke Wang came out on the winning end, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0. Weaver and VanCise were playing their first varsity match.
At No. 1 singles, Jay County senior Alex Clark lost to Bryant Barger 6-0. 6-2, and Garrett Rodgers lost to Noah Tobias 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
The Patriots’ No. 1 doubles team of Sok Vormohr and Payton Heniser dropped the first set 6-0 before rallying slightly in the second, losing 6-2.

Jay boys blanked
For the second consecutive game, Jay County was unable to find the back of the net.
Jay County’s boys soccer team dropped its Allen County Athletic Conference opener Thursday to the Heritage Patriots, 1-0.
The Patriot squads played to a scoreless tie in the first half, with both teams getting chances on net. JCHS sophomore Zaaron Lee had a shot from inside the goalie box, but it sailed over the net.
Heritage broke the tie four minutes into the second half, and held on down the stretch in a physical back-and-forth game to keep Jay County off the scoreboard. The Patriots were also shut out Tuesday in a 2-0, season-opening loss to Muncie Central.
Jay County freshman Daniel Fugiett and junior Nathan Heitkamp also had shots on goal for the host team. Senior goalkeeper Trevor Moeller made four saves.

Tigers top Tribe
VERSAILLES, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys golf team lost its second Midwest Athletic Conference match Thursday.
The Versailles Tigers won 160-184 at Stillwater Valley Golf Course.
Chase Bruns led the Indians (3-4, 1-2 MAC) with a 41, making par twice and recording a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole. Jackson Hobbs converted par three times to finish second on the team with a 45.
Micaiah Cox and Colt Grieshop followed with scores of 48 and 50 respectively.
Austin Faller (52) and Nick Litmer (65) also competed for the Tribe.
Griffin Riegle of Versailles was the match medalist with a 1-over par 36.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity squad also lost, 219-227.
Calvin Rammel had a 50 for the Tribe’s best score, and Austin Pohl shot a 53. Brandon Homan was third on the team with a 60, and Aaron Lochtefeld finished with a 64.

FR girls lose
CELINA, Ohio — The Indians fell below .500 for the first time this season.
Fort Recovery’s girls golf team lost to the Versailles Tigers on Thursday, 196-213 at Mercer County Elks Golf Club.
Trisha Thien shot a season-low 50 to lead the Indians (1-2, 0-2 MAC). Tori Vaughn matched her season best with a 51, and Elli Keller also had a season best, finishing with a 54.
Cori Stone rounded out the Tribe’s team total with a 58, three strokes off her best score of the season.
