Kohler, Hare open with tourney wins

DAYTON, Ohio — Andy Kohler made a habit of winning tournaments as a junior.
Saturday, he kicked off his senior campaign with another victory.
Kohler (5-0) and sophomore Gaven Hare (3-0) both took first place in their respective weight classes in helping the Jay County High School wrestling team finish fourth at the Franklin County Invitational in Dayton, Ohio.
The Patriots scored 191 points and were a half point behind the Ross Rams. The Western Brown Broncos won the 11-team invitational with 217.5 points, and the Campbell County (Kentucky) Camels were close behind with 215.5 points.
Kohler, who qualified for state last season at 182 pounds and is currently ranked fifth by InterMat, won the same weight class on Saturday. Hare earned the top spot at 220 pounds.
Finishing second were Dallas Dudelston (132), Tyler Leonhard (152) and Ivan Hemmelgarn (160). Thomas Hemmelgarn placed third at 145 pounds. Levi Hummel (170) was fourth, Kaimen Sanders (120) placed fifth and Jacob Ferguson (HWT) finished sixth.

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team picked up its first victory of ­the season Saturday, 40-15 against Franklin Monroe.
Junior Whitney Will had a game-high 17 points to lead the Indians (1-1). She also had a team-high eight rebounds, six of which were on the offensive side of the court.

Senior Kendra Siefring followed with 12 points and five steals, and Carley Stone had four to go with her three assists and two steals.
Grace Thien also notched four steals, and Jocelyn Kaiser blocked three shots.
The Tribe junior varsity team had a rough second quarter and rallied late but fell short in a 29-27 loss to Columbus Grove.
Hannah Knapke paced FRHS with eight points, and Brooke Gaerke followed with six. Elise Gehle and Audra Metzger each added four points. Gehle had a game-high nine rebounds.

MONROEVILLE — Madi Wurster had a career-high 20 points as the South Adams girls basketball team moved to 8-0 with a 55-37 victory Saturday against Heritage.
South Adams (8-0, 2-0 ACAC) used a 19-point second quarter to double-up the Patriots (3-7, 0-2) at half, 30-15. The advantage shrunk to 12 points heading into the fourth quarter before the Starfires pulled away in the final eight minutes.
Cindy In’t Groen tallied 15 points to join Wurster in double figures. Lexi Dellinger added eight points and Sydney Pierce contributed seven points.
Rozlynn Everhart led the Patriots with 13 points.
