Jay Co. seniors named all-state

For the second time in three years, a Jay County High School football player was given IFCA all-state honors.
A pair of Patriot seniors also made the Indianapolis Colts Academic All-State team.
The Indiana Football Coaches Association on Friday named senior defensive end Mario Rodriguez to the Class 4A All-State team.
The last Patriot to receive the honor was 2013 graduate Eric Hemmelgarn, who now plays for University of Saint Francis.
Rodriguez totaled 38 tackles in seven games for Jay County (4-6). He also had five tackles for loss, led the team with four sacks and returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown.
Drew Huffman and Levi Hummel were named to the Colts’ all-state team. They will be honored Dec. 20 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis during the Colts’ game against the Houston Texans.
To be considered academic all-state, players must meet the following criteria: play in 70 percent of his team’s games, have at least a 3.3 GPA and be in the top 5 percent of their graduating class.
Hunter Prescott (2014) and Collin Saxman (2013) are the last two Patriots to be named to the Colts’ academic all state squad.
Stars 2-3 at invite
BERNE — The South Adams wrestling team finished 2-3 at the Spencer Haworth Invitational it hosted Saturday.
South Adams opened with wins against the Bluffton Tigers, an Allen County Athletic Conference opponent, and the Eastbrook Panthers. The Starfires defeated the Tigers 42-32 and the Panthers 54-30.
South Adams then fell to Triton (60-28), ACAC foe Woodlan (43-42) and Lafayette Harrison (45-30).
Wyatt Miller (4-0) and Isaiah Baumgartner (3-0) were the lone Starfires to go undefeated on the day. Logan Hicks and Taylor Cuellar were both 2-1, and Brandon Wynn and Corbin Blomeke were both 2-2. Dylan Zuercher was 1-2 for the tournament.
JC freshmen win
ANDERSON — Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team moved to 3-0 Monday with a 40-33 victory against the Anderson Indians.
The score was tied at 10 after the opening quarter, but an 8-5 Patriot advantage in the second gave them the lead. Jay County scored 16 points in the final period to pull away from the Indians.
Parker Grimes led the Patriots with 15 points, eight of which came in the final period. Gabe Faulkner and Matt Franks were both second on the team with nine points.
Wyatt Geesaman added five points, and Gavin Randall added two.
’Dogs top Stars
NEW HAVEN — South Adams’ freshman boys basketball team lost Monday to the New Haven Bulldogs, 55-39.
Grant Besser led South Adams with 15 points. Joe Stuber followed with nine points, and Spenser Clark tallied six.
Mason Sell and Josh Price added five and four points respectively.
