Bruns pours in career-high 25 points in blowout victory
NEW BREMEN, Ohio — The long football season that led to minimal practice time hasn’t seemed to have any effect on the Indians.
After earning a pair of non-conference wins to open the year, the Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team began Midwest Athletic Conference play Friday with an emphatic victory. It scored nearly as many points in the second quarter — 28 — as the New Bremen Cardinals did in the entire game on the way to an 83-33 blowout.
The Indians (3-0, 1-0 MAC), whose season opener was delayed by two weeks because of the football team’s run to the Division VII state championship, already had an eight-point lead before dominating the second quarter. They outscored New Bremen 28-4 in the period for a 32-point halftime lead and cruised in the second half.
Chase Bruns led the offensive onslaught by the Tribe as he caught fire from 3-point range. He shot 6-of-9 (67 percent) from long distance and was 8-of-12 from the field overall for a career-high 25 points.
Wes Wenning and Jason Roessner joined him in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. Micaiah Cox and Matt Bihn each added nine points, and Caleb Martin scored eight.
Cox, who is averaging a double-double, hauled in 15 rebounds to lead Fort Recovery to a 38-23 advantage on the glass.
Bihn and Roessner added six rebounds.
Point guard Brandon Schoen totaled seven assists and seven steals for the Indians, who will host Jay County with junior varsity action beginning at 6 p.m. tonight.
Kaelen Reeds was the only Cardinal to reach double figures as he totaled 10 points and four rebounds. Avery Powers followed with six points, and Jacob Rindler had four rebounds.
New Bremen (1-6, 1-2 MAC) struggled to score throughout the game, shooting 12-of-42 (29 percent).

Fort Recovery’s defense came up big in the second quarter as it topped the Cardinals 56-42.
The Indians trailed by one after the opening period, but limited New Bremen to just two points in the second quarter. FRHS sustained its seven-point lead in the third quarter and then pulled away in the fourth.
Payton Jutte paced the Tribe with 16 points. Travis Sutter added 11, and Kyle Knapke scored 12.
Cade Wendel dished out eight assists, and Clayton Pearson had four rebounds.
Grant Hoehne’s 19 points and eight rebounds led the Cardinals, and Jacob Rindler chipped in nine points.
