Fourth-ranked Kohler wins Spartan Classic

CONNERSVILLE — In one of the biggest tournaments of the season, a Patriot senior kept his perfect record in tact.
Andy Kohler, who is ranked fourth in the state by IndianaMat, remained undefeated by winning the 182-pound championship Wednesday at the Connersville Spartan Classic.
He was one of five Patriots to finish in the top eight, helping the Jay County High School wrestling team to a seventh-place finish in the two-day, 32-team tournament.
Carmel and Lebanon tied at the top of the standings with 216 points, and Valparaiso was third with 208.5. Jay County scored 149 points.
Kohler defeated Corbin Maddox 7-1 in the championship match, moving to 26-0 with his five tournament victories. Kohler defeated Maddox at regional last season.
Fellow senior Levi Hummel also wrestled in the championship at 170 pounds, but lost a 15-6 major decision to Mike Lichtenberger of Valparaiso.
Also finishing in the top eight for Jay County were Ivan Hemmelgarn (sixth – 160), Dallas Dudelston (fifth – 132) and Davis Anderson (eighth – 113).

INDIANAPOLIS — The South Adams wrestling team went 3-2 Tuesday at the Ben Davis tournament.
South Adams bounced back from losses against Mt. Vernon (42-33) and Fountain Central (42-37) to notch wins against Tri-West (51-6), Cloverdale (48-15) and Northwest (54-0).
Wyatt Miller, Brandon Wynn, Briar Goodwin, Isaiah Baumgartner and Taylor Cuellar all went undefeated on the day, finishing with 5-0 records.
Corbin and Ethan Blomeke were both 4-1, with Trey Kongar and Jordan Heckler each finishing 3-2.
John Frye was 2-3.
