WOODBURN — South Adams High Schools’ girls basketball team gave up a big second quarter and found itself trailing at halftime.
The Starfires came out firing after the break to defeat the host Woodlan Warriors 60-47 in the opening round of the Class 2A Sectional 36 tournament.
South Adams (14-9) will meet Churubusco (13-9) in the semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday. The Starfires routed the Eagles in their regular-season meeting Jan. 29, 56-35.
After trailing 26-22 at intermission, the Starfires scored 17 and 21 points in the third and fourth quarters respectively. The Warriors (7-16) scored just 21 points in the final two quarters. It was the third time this season South Adams defeated Woodlan.
Cindy In’tGroen had a team-high 20 points for South Adams, and Sydney Willis and Sharon Balsiger each added 13. Mackenzie Jennings and Lexi Dellinger added five points apiece.
Woodlan’s Rain Hinton led all players with 23 points, and Kendra Graber added 11.

Stinson finishes 19th
FISHERS — Jay County High School junior Heather Stinson finished 19th on Tuesday in the IHSAA diving regional at Fishers.
Stinson, who placed third at Saturday’s sectional meet, scored 181.6 points in five dives to miss the first cut. She finished ahead of fellow sectional diver Muncie Central’s Madison Cline (175.55), and behind Allyson Norby of Bellmont. Norby scored 207.65.
Sophomore Brook Schultz of Hamilton Heights won the regional with 566.2 points for 11 dives.

Girls place third
OSSIAN — The Jay County middle school girls swim team placed third Tuesday at the Norwell Invitational.
The squad, which consists of swimmers from both East Jay and West Jay middle schools, scored 257 points.
Indian Springs won the invite with 328 points, and host Norwell was second with 271 points.
Eliza Bader was the lone double-winner for the Jay tankers. She earned victories in both the 50-yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke.
She teamed up with Lili Clemmons, Ashlyn Dow and Kaitlyn Dow to finish second in the 400 freestyle relay and third in the 200 medley relay.
Sisters Kaitlyn Dow (second – 100 freestyle, third – 200 freestyle) and Ashlyn Dow (second – 400 freestyle, third 100 individual medley) both earned top-six finishes for Jay County.
Also placing in the top six were Rieley Brewster (fourth – 200 freestyle, fifth – 50 butterfly) and Clemmons (third – 50 freestyle, fourth – 100 backstroke).
South Adams finished fourth with 186 points. Individual results were not available for the Starfires.
