Star girls fall in opener

BERNE — The South Adams girls basketball team surrendered 35 points in the second half Tuesday as it dropped the opening game of the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament to Leo, 58-46.
The Starfires (8-7) trailed 23-18 at halftime, but costly turnovers in the third quarter led to 17 points by the Leo Lions (9-5) who will host the Heritage Patriots in the semifinal on Thursday.
South Adams scored 19 points in the fourth quarter, but an 18-point effort by Leo kept the game out of reach for the Stars.
Cindy In’t Groen and Lexi Dellinger both had a dozen points for the Stars, and Sharon Balsiger chipped in with 10 points.
Makenzie Jennings added seven points and Sydney Willis tallied seven.
The Starfires will play in the consolation game against Woodlan at noon Saturday at Heritage.
Leo tops Starfires
BERNE — South Adams suffered a blowout loss to Leo on Saturday.
The Starfires showed improvement on Tuesday.
Three days after losing 107-77 to Leo, the Lions defeated the Starfires 83-73 in the opening round of the ACAC tournament.
Leo will host Woodlan at 7 p.m. tonight in the semifinal, with the winner to face either Bluffton or Jay County in the championship at 6 p.m. Saturday in Berne.
After trailing 45-31 at half, South Adams (3-6) poured in 23 points in the third quarter to get within seven, 61-54. But like it did Saturday, Leo pulled away in the final frame to remain undefeated at 12-0.
Marcus Teeter led South Adams with 23 points, and Conner Sealscott followed with 17 points. Jared Grabau chipped in with 12 and Marco Vasquez added 10.
Leo’s Jordan Eldridge led all players with 26 points.
South Adams travels to Monroeville to take on the Heritage Patriots at 10 a.m. Saturday in the consolation game.
SA edges Braves
DECATUR — The South Adams boys swim team edged Bellmont on Tuesday, beating the host Braves 87-85.
The Bellmont girls topped South Adams, 112-68.
Daniel Burson, Drew LeFever and David Steffen were all double winners for the Starfire boys. Burson took first in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle, LeFever won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, and David Steffen was first in the 50 and 100 freestyle.
Jesse Sutton finished first in the100 backstroke.
Ashton Klopp, Brette Klopp and Cady Farlow won two events each for the SAHS girls. Ashton Klopp won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, her sister Brette took first in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, and Farlow earned wins in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
Olivia Von Gunten also earned a win for the Stars in the 500 freestyle.
