Cope sets record in first meet
Dylan Cope didn’t waste any time.
The 2013 Jay County High School graduate broke a school record for the Indiana University East men’s track team in its first meet of the season Saturday at the Fred Wilt Memorial Indoor Invitational hosted by Anderson.
Cope shattered the Red Wolves’ record in the 800-meter run as he finished second in 1:57.92. His time was more than 15 seconds faster than the previous mark of 2:13.67 set by Patrick Smith in 2011 and left him just 0.19 seconds behind Webster’s David Lambus for first place in the event.
The sophomore also teamed with Clint Swanson, Kyle Hall and Kyle Slick for fourth place in the 4x400 relay in 3:33.82.
Eme Miller

Turned in a pair of second-place finishes Feb. 22 for the Defiance College women’s track team at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at Rose-Hulman.
Miller finished second in a pair of long-distance races, trailing Manchester sophomore Mariah Jordan in both. She finished the 3,00-meter run in 10 minutes, 29.81 seconds, and the 5,000 run in 18:45.29.
Tyler Back
Jay County – 2013
Placed in the top 11 of two events for Grace College on Feb. 20 and 21 at the National Christian College Athletic Association Indoor Track Championships at Cedarville University in Ohio.
Back’s top effort came in the weight throw as he finished in 10th place. He recorded a toss of 44 feet, 10 ¼ inches.
The sophomore was also 11th in the shot put at 42 feet, 10 ¾ inches.
Kegan Comer
Jay County – 2013
Was one of two University of St. Francis men’s basketball players to score in double figures Saturday for the NAIA No. 8 Cougars in a 62-61 loss to 11th-ranked Bethel.
Comer totaled 10 points for USF (25-7) while adding three rebounds, two assists and a block. He also had six points Feb. 25 in a 71-52 victory over Marian.
The sophomore totaled five points, three assists, one steal and one rebound Feb. 21 as the Cougars topped Goshen 80-65. His team will play University of St. Francis of Illinois in the opening round of the NAIA Division II tournament March 12.
Wade Gelhaus
Fort Recovery – 2013
Came off the bench to help the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team to a 69-62 victory Wednesday over Findlay in the opening round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
Gelhaus hit both of his field-goal attempts, including a 3-pointer, to finish with five points for the Cardinals (21-8), who advance to play Saturday at Lake Superior State. He also had a rebound and a block.
He had three assists Feb. 19 in a 71-70 loss to Grand Valley State, and grabbed a pair of rebounds Feb. 26 in a 65-61 loss to Hillsdale.
Elijah Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2014
Had three points, three rebounds and a pair of steals for the University of Findlay’s men’s basketball team in a 69-62 loss Wednesday to Saginaw Valley State in the opening round of the GLIAC tournament.
Kahlig made one of his four 3-point attempts and finished 1-for-7 from the field.
He had eight points and three rebounds in a 77-64 win Feb. 19 against Walsh, before turning in back-to-back 10-point efforts Feb. 21 at Malone (a 70-62 win) and Feb. 26 against Wayne State (86-70 victory).
The Oilers finish their season 16-11 (13-9 GLIAC).
Holly Brunswick
Fort Recovery – 2011
Made the only shot she attempted in the final home game of her career as the Ohio Dominican University women’s basketball team topped Tiffin 91-72 Feb. 26.
Brunswick hit a 3-pointer as she contributed to her team’s 51-percent shooting effort. She also had two points Feb. 21 in a 77-45 win over Lake Erie.
Neal Fennig
Jay County – 2011
Competed Wednesday for the Ball State University men’s swim team on the opening day of the Mid-American Conference Championships.
Fennig and teammates Tanner Barton, Andrew Carlson and Joe Morris finished sixth in the 800-yard freestyle relay. They posted a time of 6 minutes, 45 seconds.
Collin Affolder
South Adams – 2014
Tallied his first career hit and runs for the Bethel College Pilot baseball team in a doubleheader Saturday at Toccoa Falls College.
Affolder had a hit and scored both runs for the Pilots (0-5) in a 7-2 loss to the Eagles. He added a single in the nightcap, a 10-8 defeat. He also had a pair of walks Friday against the Eagles.
Monday against Webber International, Affolder notched his first career RBI in an 8-6 loss.
Zane Shreve
Jay County – 2014
Made his collegiate debut Feb. 20 for Miami University’s men’s track and field team as it closed out its indoor schedule at the Ohio State Tune-Up.
The RedHawks placed third.
Shreve finished eighth in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 1¼ inches. He also placed 30th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.62 seconds.
