Wellman wins two races, JC girls second

MUNCIE — Megan Wellman won both distance races on Saturday, helping the Jay County girls track team to a runner-up finish at the Muncie Central Relays.
The Yorktown Tigers won with 132 points. Jay County scored 95.5 points, squeaking by the host Bearcats by a half point for second place. It was the second time this season the Tigers finished ahead of Jay County (17-2).
Wellman, a junior, won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 37.5 seconds. She was also first in the 3,200 run, crossing the finish line in 12:15.7.
Emma Laux and Erika Kunkler also picked up wins for the Patriots. Laux was first in the 100 dash in 13.16 seconds, and Kunkler won the 800 run with a time of 2:34.2.
Laux was also runner-up in the 200 dash (27.27). Kunkler joined Briana Muhlenkamp, Lexi Myers and Taylor Homan to finish second in the 4x400 relay, and Lucy Laux was also second in the long jump (16 feet, 3 inches). McKensie Muhlenkamp turned in a top-three finish, placing third in the discus with a distance of 88 feet, 9 inches.

Central rallies by JC
MUNCIE — Jay County’s baseball team cruised to a 7-0 lead in game two Saturday, 2 1/2 innings away from earning a split in a doubleheader with Muncie Central.
Then the Bearcat offense showed life.
Muncie Central rallied for eight runs in the fifth inning and held Jay County scoreless over the final two, completing the come-from-behind, 8-7 victory to secure a sweep. The Patriots dropped the first game, 6-3.
Jay County (8-8) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two, thanks to an RBI single by Jacob Geesaman and a two-run double by Josh Vaughn. The Patriots added a single run in each of the next four innings to build its lead before the Bearcats mounted their comeback. Ethan Myers suffered the loss, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits.
In game one, Jay County fell behind 5-0 in the third inning, but struck for three runs in the fourth. Muncie Central responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the win.
Tanner Reynolds took the loss, giving up five earned runs on eight hits.

Cole Stiglemen had a team-high five hits, and Vaughn drove in three runs. Geesaman tallied three hits, with Levi Stant, Ethan Myers and Vaughn each with two hits.

Jay golfers fifth
WINCHESTER — Jay County’s boys golf team finished fifth Saturday in the Winchester Invitational at Winchester Golf Club.
Muncie Central won the 12-team field with a score of 322. Union County was third with 334, and Blackford shot a 340 for third. Jay County had a team score of 350.
Jay Houck led the Patriots with a 7-over-par 79. Graham Haines followed with an 84, and Kyler Hudson was third on the team with a 95.
Collin Haines rounded out the Jay County team score with a 92 from the No. 5 spot. Nick Hayden also competed, turning in a score of 101.

Patriot boys fourth
NEW CASTLE — The Jay County boys track team finished fourth Friday night at New Castle.
The Indians from Anderson won the six-team meet with 175 points, and the Yorktown Tigers were second with 108. The host Trojans scored 68 points for third. The Patriots scored 49 points, edging Connersville by one point.
Nathan Heitkamp was the lone winner for the Patriots. The junior placed first in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, 7 3/4 inches. He also finished third in the 100-yard dash.
Aaron Neal was second and third respectively in the 110 hurdles and long jump. Andrew Trewyn finished third in the high jump, and the 4x800 relay team of Tanner Craw, Dallas Dudelston, Tyler Leonhard and Luke Weaver was also third.
