Laux, Kunkler lead JC runners


PONETO — Ava Kunkler and Lucy Laux each won two events Tuesday as the Jay County High School girls track team defeated the Woodlan Wariors and host Southern Wells Raiders.
Jay County (19-2) scored 61 points, finishing ahead of Woodlan’s 50. Southern Wells scored 44 points for third place.
The Patriot boys finished third with 35 points, behind Woodlan (67)?and Southern Wells (54).
Kunkler, a junior, won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 32 seconds, and crossed the finish line in 5:37 to win the 1,600 run. Laux, a freshman, won both the 100 dash (18.42 seconds) and long jump (15 feet, 5 inches).
Kunkler also anchored the Patriots’ winning 4x400 relay team of Erika Kunkler, Lexi Myers and Malarie Houck. The quartet finished in 4:29.
Audrey Shreve (high jump) and Rebekah Corwin (shot put) also earned wins for the Patriots.
Dallas Dudelston and Aaron Neal were the lone winners for the Patriot boys. Dudelston crossed the finish line in 11:23 to win the 3,200, and Neal leapt 19 feet, 11 inches, to place first in the long jump.

Hudson fires 39
NEW HAVEN — Kyler Hudson fired a career-best 39 Tuesday, helping the Jay County golf team to a second place finish.

The 16th-ranked Leo Lions won the four-team match at Whispering Creek Golf Club with a team score of 141, and Jay County shot a 169. Heritage (176) was third, and Woodlan (199) placed fourth.
Golfing from the Patriots’ No. 3 position, Hudson birdied the par-4 second and the par-5 ninth. He also made par three times, leading the Patriots by four strokes.
Graham Haines had one birdie and made par three times to finish with a 43. Nick Hayden tied Haines, and Jay Houck shot a 44 to round out the Patriots’ team score.
Collin Haines also competed, turning in a score of 51.
Leo’s Nate Morris won match medalist honors, firing a 4-under 32.

Stars hang on
BERNE — South Adams took a one-run lead in the second inning Tuesday, but a two-run sixth gave the Starfires cushion in a 4-2 victory against Jay County.
Jay County (8-9, 2-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Cole Stigleman, but the host Starfires (8-8, 2-2 ACAC) responded with an RBI double by Chandler Ingle.
A Jayden Dull sacrifice fly in the third put the Stars on top 2-1, and they added two more in the sixth when a throwing error on a drag bunt by Kyle Cox allowed Conner Sealscott and Justin Nussbaum to score.
Jay County scored one in the top of the seventh, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Skylar Schoch, Corbin Blomeke, Derek Wanner, Cox, Ingle and Sealscott all tallied hits for South Adams. Nussbaum got the win, scattering 10 hits and striking out seven while giving up two runs — one earned.
Stigleman paced the Patriots with a pair of singles, with Josh Vaughn and Geesaman both adding doubles. Jake Myers suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs — one earned — while walking one and also striking out seven.

Patriot JV rallies
Jay County’s junior varsity team saw an early lead slip away, but rallied to win in walk-off fashion on Tuesday, beating the South Adams Starfires 6-5 in eight innings.
The Patriots scored three runs in the first inning, but saw the lead vanish as the Stars scored twice in the third and once in each of the fourth and fifth. Jay County tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, but South Adams grabbed the lead with one more run in the sixth.
Mitchell and Lance Ferguson, Mitchell Frasher and Garrett Rodgers each had singles for Jay County, and Connor Davis smacked a double.
Braxton Haight led South Adams with three hits and an RBI. Tyler Sprunger had a double and a single, and Austin Gerber tallied two singles.

Jay routs SA
The Jay County junior varsity softball team needed just five innings to beat South Adams on Tuesday, 12-2.
The Patriots (8-4) had a 3-2 lead after the second inning, but added two in the third and poured on six in the fourth for an 11-2 advantage. They tacked on one more in the fifth for good measure to get the run-rule victory.
Kiersten Rabon led the Patriots with two doubles and a single. Irene Braun had a single and a double, with Blaize Miller and Katie Carpenter each adding two singles. Kaylee Inman, Kylie Ring, Hannah Chapman and Emily Corn had one hit apiece.
Inman earned the win pitching, improving her record to 3-1 on the season.

Bearcats blank JC
MUNCIE — Jay County’s girls tennis team ran into a tough Muncie Central squad, losing 5-0 to the host Bearcats on Tuesday.
The Patriot junior varsity team also lost, 4-2. 
At No. 1 singles, JCHS senior Jessica Kerrigan fell to Becca Hollowell 6-0, 6-0, and Kyra Braun lost 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 2 singles. Michelle Wellman dropped her match at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-0.
The Patriot No. 1 doubles team of Emily Westgerdes and Faith Parr lost to Kacie Johnson and Becky Mann 6-0, 6-3. Central’s Laura Kulig and Taylor Rabel defeated Abby Saxman and Abby Reier at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
The No. 4 JV doubles team of Megan Smith and Alexus Liette won 6-2, and Katy Hamilton and Abby Muhlenkamp won at No. 6 doubles, 6-4.
