With a two-run lead heading into the top of the seventh Heritage knew they would need more if they wanted the win as well as a share of the conference title.
The visiting Patriots would add three runs, and they proved to be the biggest of the game.
Jay County High School softball would attempt a rally in the bottom half of the inning, bringing around two runs, but would fall short with the tying run at the plate. Heritage would grab the win and its share of the ACAC title with a 13-10 victory.
With their lead at two, the visiting Patriots wanted to add some insurance runs heading into the final inning.
“We knew what we had on the board wasn’t going to be enough, they got some live bats and they’re a good team,” said Heritage coach Amanda Minch.
Behind the heart of its line up, Heritage (16-4, 6-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) was able to plate three runs in the top half of the inning to increase its lead to five.
Jay County scored two in the bottom of the seventh off a double by Chloe Trisell, who was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. It would roll around to the top of its line up with the tying run at the plate, but a couple of fly outs ended the game.
After a hot start, Jay County (12-10, 4-3 ACAC) gave up two big innings in the third and fourth to watch their lead slip away as five errors in the game resulted in seven unearned runs. Both teams had 14 hits, but mistakes and extra opportunities dug a deep hole for Jay County.
“Four out of the seven innings we gave them extra outs and they made it hurt, that’s what good teams do,” said JCHS coach Doug Arbuckle.
Jay County plated its first three batters on the way to a four-run first inning.
It sent eight batters to the plate in the frame, paving the way for a second inning during which No. 2 and 3 hitters Courtney Finnerty and Catherine Dunn would score again with back-to-back-to-back doubles.
Finnerty was finished 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI while Dunn was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Adding another run in the third, Jay County was out to an early 7-3 lead.
Heritage would fight back and take advantage of the errors made by Jay County, and Minch said rallying is nothing new for her squad.
“We’ve been down, we’ve come back. I think I was more nervous than the kids were,” Minch said. “We were down 7-3 and they didn’t even bat an eye.”
Three errors by Jay County led the way to seven runs for Heritage and put it ahead 10-8 after four innings of play. That score held until the seventh, when the visiting Patriots tacked on their three runs and the home team’s rally fell short.
McKayla Norris took the loss, giving up five runs — five earned — in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Catherine Dunn started and allowed eight runs, only two of which were earned.
Rozlynn Everhart went 3-for-5 with two doubles to pace Heritage, and Makalah Krick reached base in all five of her at bats going 3-for-4 with a walk. Natalie Lechleitner came around to score three times for Heritage.
Heritage with its win ensures a share of the ACAC title along with Leo, a big improvement over their fourth place finish from last year.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve been up there,” Minch said.
Senior Kamio Gilreath went the distance for Heritage, giving up 10 runs and striking out six in the win.
Randi Auker was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs to lead Jay County. Kaili Baughman was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Eight of the home Patriots’ nine hitters crossed the plate, and Arbuckle noted that putting up runs will continue to be key for the Patriots in the absence of Larissa Boles. The senior pitcher is out for the season with a knee injury.
“We scored pretty much all the way through the lineup.” Arbuckle said. “We gotta have that consistency with everybody contributing in the lineup.”
