Jay Co. walks off in thriller
Jay County High School’s softball team had a double-digit deficit twice.
It trailed Monroe Central 11-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning, and was behind 16-3 going into the home half of the fourth.
The Patriots scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday for a wild, come-from-behind 19-18 victory over the Golden Bears.
Jay County (13-11) scored five runs in the fourth to trail 16-8, before adding four more in the sixth for a 16-12 deficit. Monroe Central tacked on two more in the top of the seventh before the Patriots mounted their comeback.
Catherine Dunn, who hit her fifth home run of the season earlier in the game, drove in Courtney Finnerty for the game-winning run.
Finnerty added three hits, tallied three RBIs and scored three times for the Patriots.
Gabby Hart also tallied three hits. She also scored three times and drove in a pair. Catera Gierhart and Kaili Baughman each had two hits and two RBIs, as did Emily Corn, who was making her varsity debut.
Chloe Trissel added a single and also drove in a pair of runs.
Rachel Antrim got the win in four innings of relief. She gave up seven runs — four earned — on nine hits.
