Starfires' LeFever qualifies for state finals

MARION — Drew LeFever finished 10th in the shot put at regional as a sophomore.
This season, he’s going to state.
The South Adams High School junior set a new school record of 52 feet, 6 1/2 inches to finish the runner-up at the Marion regional on Thursday.
The top three places in each event advance to the state meet.
LeFever also placed 10th in the discus with a throw of 141 feet, 6 inches, helping the Starfires to 10 points.
South Adams was in a four-way tie for 17th out of 37 scoring teams.
Senior Brock Twitty placed eighth in the shot put with a distance of 48 feet, 1 3/4 inches.
Also competing for the Starfires was McGerran Clouser (eighth – 800 run), Bailey McIntire (13th – 1,600) and David Steffen (15th – 800) .
The Starfires’ 4x800 relay team of Wyatt Miller, Clouser, Steffen and McIntire finished 10th.

Stars fall in extras
BUTLER — The Starfire baseball team scrapped for the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Eagles pulled away in the eighth.
Churubusco struck for six runs in the eighth inning Thursday to defeat South Adams 9-3 in the opening round of the Class 2A Sectional 36 tournament at Eastside.
After Churubusco took a 1-0 lead in the first, South Adams (13-14) answered with a run in the second inning. The Starfires nabbed a one-run lead with a solo home run by Skylar Schoch in the fifth, but the Eagles scored two in the sixth for a 3-2 lead. Kyle Cox crossed the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extras.
Jayden Dull paced the Stars with a single and a double.
Cox took the loss, giving up two earned runs on two hits without recording an out.

Jay tops Indians
Jay County’s boys golf team defeated the Union City Indians on Thursday, 175-184, at Portland Golf Club.
After a shaky start, Jay Houck recovered to lead the Patriots with a 42. He made par four times, and had four bogeys following a triple-bogey on the par-4 10th.
Graham Haines followed Houck with a 43, including a birdie on the par-3 18th. Nick Hayden had a 44, and Collin Haines closed out the Patriots’ team score with a 46.
Kyler Hudson shot a 47 from the No. 3 spot.
Union City’s Dylan Doppler earned match medalist honors, edging Houck by two strokes.
