Tankers set new record
WESTFIELD — The Patriots set the tone for a solid meet from the first race.
Jay County High School’s girls swim team set a new meet record in the 200-yard medley relay and had two other victories Saturday as it finished third at the Westfield Invitational.
Fishers won the seven-team meet with a commanding 602.5 points. The host Shamrocks were second with 491 points, and Jay County tallied 356.
The Patriots’ medley relay team of Anne Vormohr, Alex Bader, Sophie Bader and Ashley Mark swam to a victory with a time of 1 minute, 51.04 seconds. The same quartet finished second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:42.22, a mere eight hundredths of a second behind Fishers.
Vormohr added two individual victories, touching the wall first in both the 50 freestyle (24.72 seconds) and 100 backstroke (59.15 seconds).
Sophie and Alex Bader also added a pair of runner-up finishes. Sophie, a senior, was second in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Alex, a sophomore, finished second in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
Also earning top-eight finishes for Jay County were Lou Moser (sixth –diving), Samantha Link (seventh – diving) and Elizabeth McDowell (eighth – 200 freestyle).

BERNE — South Adams’ girls basketball team had three players reach double figures Saturday in a 61-46 victory against Union City.
A strong opening quarter gave South Adams (4-0) a 14-6 lead, and it extended the advantage to 30-17 at half. The Starfires held off a second-half push by the Indians to remain undefeated.
Senior Cindy In’t Groen led all players with 21 points, her second game eclipsing the 20-point mark. Madi Wurster, a sophomore, scored a career-high 18 points, and Lexi Dellinger chipped in with 11 points.
Maddie Morgan added eight points and Sydney Pierce tallied three.
Baylee Hartman led Union City with 15 points.
ACAC teams released
Nearly a dozen local football players were named to the Allen County Athletic Conference first and second teams today.
Seniors Mario Rodriguez of Jay County and Drew LeFever of South Adams were the lone first-team members from their respective teams. Rodriguez was honored as a defensive lineman and LeFever as a linebacker.
Jay County (4-6, 2-4 ACAC) had six members named to the second-team, including Cole Stigleman (wide receiver), Aaron Neal (wide receiver), Drew Huffman (running back), Nick Lairson (defensive line), Ethan Theurer (linebacker) and Thomas Noble (linebacker).
South Adams (1-9, 0-6 ACAC) had three players earn second-team all conference. They included defensive lineman James Groh and Gabe Schwartz, and punter Blade Zeitvogel.
Three qualify
LAFAYETTE — Three local athletes qualified for the competitive gymnastics state championship.
Hannah Outcalt, Halle Hill and Courtney Miles competed Saturday in the It’s All Groovy Gymnastics Invitational at Lafayette Sports Center.
Miles, a Jay County High School sophomore, scored 33.475 in the all-around competition to qualify as a level 8 gymnast. She was second on floor exercise (8.875), third on balance beam (8.375) and sixth on vault (8.125). She added an 8.1 on uneven bars.
Outcalt, a West Jay Middle School seventh grader, also placed fourth in all-around with 33.325 points in level 4. Her 8.65 on beam was good enough for first, and she was forth on vault (8.65) and floor (8.525). She added a 7.5 on bars.
Hill, an eighth grader at West Jay, also qualified for state with a 32.725 all-around score. She was ninth. Her highest total was a 9.2 to earn first place on floor exercise. She had an 8.325 on bars, 8.0 on vault and 7.2 on beam.
