Goodwin, Johnson run in Louisville

Collegiate Check-up

Two area runners participated in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic on Saturday.
Aleesha Goodwin, a 2015 South Adams High School graduate, was the sixth runner for the Indiana Tech Warriors as they finished 16th in the non-Division I race. The Warriors totaled 439 points.
Jay County graduate Abigail Johnson ran for Indiana Wesleyan in the women’s 5K Silver race. The Wildcats scored 136 points for second place out of 41 teams.
Goodwin finished 149th with a time of 21 minutes, 46.31 seconds, eight seconds behind teammate Justice Hosey for the fifth and final scoring spot.
Johnson, a sophomore, crossed the finish line in 133rd place with a time of 21:12.82.

Cady Farlow
South Adams – 2015
Made her collegiate debut for the Purdue University women’s swim team Friday in the Michigan State University Outdoor Invitational.
The Boilermakers defeated the host Spartans 176-66, but lost to the University of Michigan 138.5-97.5.
The freshman was fifth in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 17.17 seconds, almost four second behind Emily Kopas of Michigan.
Farlow then placed sixth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:51.02. Kopas won that event as well in 2:40.22.

Eric Hemmelgarn
Jay County – 2014
Had a key stop late in the fourth quarter Saturday for the University of Saint Francis football team in a 45-42 victory against the NAIA No. 8 Marian Knights.
Just inside the fourth quarter and the then-No. 12 Cougars (5-0) trailing 42-32, the redshirt freshman teamed with Lucas Sparks to stop Marian’s Robert Gibson for no gain on third-and-1 to force a punt.
The Cougars went on to score 13 straight points to upset the Knights, who reached the NAIA national championship last season.
Hemmelgarn finished with three tackles and one tackle for loss.

Hannah Moore
South Adams – 2012
Led the Huntington University women’s cross country team to a third-place finish Saturday as it hosted the E. DeWitt Baker Invitational.
Moore paced the Foresters’ top five, which was separated by less than 90 seconds, as they scored 97 points to finish behind Siena Heights (26) and Marian (56) in the nine-team field. She posted a time of 19 minutes, 40 seconds, in the 5K race to place sixth overall.

Eme Miller
Jay County – 2012
Turned in the top finish for the Defiance College women’s cross country team, which took four athletes Friday to the All-Ohio championships hosted by Cedarville.
Miller was the fastest Yellow Jacket as she finished the 6K race in 22 minutes, 54.14 seconds. She narrowly edged Emily Richards of Ohio Northern for 12th place.

Elle Sutter
Fort Recovery – 2014
Also ran in the All-Ohio meet for Ohio Northern.
Sutter crossed the finish line in 25 minutes, 16.35 seconds. She finished 122nd overall and was 12th on the Polar Bear squad.

Kelsey Fiely
Fort Recovery – 2013
Was one of three University of Northwestern Ohio volleyball players to record double-digit digs Saturday in a 21-25, 25-23, 25-16, 17-25, 16-14 victory over Lawrence Tech.
Fiely racked up 16 digs for the Racers, who are now 8-16. She also had one ace.
The junior added nine digs and an assist Wednesday in a three-set loss to Madonna and had one ace Friday in a fourset loss to Concordia.

Julie Valentine
Jay County – 2013
Helped the Stephens College women’s cross country team to a second-place finish Friday in the three-team Millikin H. Wright Classic.
Valentine recorded the No. 2 time for the Stars and finished 11th overall. She shaved more than a minute off of her career-best time in a 6K, finishing in 29 minutes, 53.4 seconds.

 

Dustin Wanner
SAHS – 2012
Came off the bench to make a pair of tackles Saturday in the Taylor University football team’s 41-13 victory over Missouri Baptist.
Wanner’s first tackle came on the final play of the opening quarter when he joined teammate Stanley Gilbert to bring down Austin Schultz after a 2-yard gain. He stopped Schultz after another 2-yard gain in the second quarter as the Trojans improved to 3-2.

Cassidy Rammel
FRHS – 2015
Was third on the team with nine kills as the University of Saint Francis volleyball team held off Crossroads League rival Taylor University on Wednesday in Upland.
The Cougars (7-12, 4-7 CL) defeated the Trojans (9-10, 6-5 CL) 25-22, 13-25, 26-24, 25-18, 17-15.
Rammel also had a dozen digs, one assist, an ace and helped on a block.

Alyssa Bluhm
SAHS – 2015
Tallied one kill on three attacks Wednesday for the Taylor University volleyball team in its loss to University of Saint Francis.
She played in just one set for the Trojans, and has been had a reserve role for most of the season.
