Jay County boys shut out Knights

OSSIAN — Angel Perez notched his first career multi-goal game.
Trevor Moeller tallied his first shutout of the season.
Jay County High School’s boys soccer team reached .500 for the first time this season with a 3-0 shutout victory against the host Norwell Knights.
Perez, a sophomore, scored his first goal of the game 9:11 into the first half. Junior Jason Schlosser put the Patriots (3-3) up 2-0 on a free kick with 12:06 left.
Colton Compton tallied his team-high third assist of the season, helping Perez score a mere 76 seconds into the second half.
Moeller stopped three shots on his way to the shutout.
The Patriots junior varsity team also won, 3-1.
Darrian Riojas had two goals and Daniel Fugiett scored the other. Both David Perez and Korbin Auker tallied assists.
Jay falls to Giants
Jay County’s boys tennis team dropped its fifth straight match Thursday in a 4-1 defeat to the Marion Giants.
Garrett Rodgers earned the only win for the Patriots (1-6). He defeated Jacob Hansel at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-0.
Jay County wasn’t able to win a game in either the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches. Alex Clark lost to Riley Worland 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Sok Vormohr and Payton Heniser dropped their No. 1 doubles match to Alex Lyons and Abishek Sehgal 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, Marion’s Nick Spitzer beat Jay Houck 6-2, 6-0, and the JCHS doubles team of Luke Weaver and Evan Van Cise lost to Zachary Spitzer and Jonathan Walts 6-4, 6-0.
The Patriots’ junior varsity team also lost, dropping all six matches.
EJ wins
The East Jay Middle School boys and girls cross country teams both earned the top five spots Thursday in a race against Muncie Southside.
Muncie Southside did not have enough runners to complete a team score.
Brayden Sprunger won the boys race with a time of 13 minutes, 31.3 seconds, edging teammate Mitchell Winner by three-tenths of a second. Flint Schmiesing was third for the Chiefs with a time of 13:52. Ben Strausburg (14:14) and Xavier Myers (14:22) were fourth and fifth respectively.
Miranda Alig won the girls’ race with a time of 15:33. Lindy Wood was second in 15:36, and Cheyenne Liette finished third in 16:37. Jocelyn Reed (17:04) was fourth and Kaitlyn Hicks (18:22) placed fifth.
Chiefs top Hawks
WINCHESTER — East Jay’s seventh grade volleyball team defeated Winchester Driver on Thursday, 25-16, 25-10.
Natalie Miles had two kills to lead the Chiefs, and Alana Kunkler added one. Kunkler also had 14 aces, as she was 17-of-20 from the service line.
Pacie Denney tallied six aces and Zoey Elzey had five, helping the Chiefs to 29 total aces.
Denney and Kunkler also had one assist apiece.
Results for the eighth grade match were not provided.
