Patriot golfers end season with victories

UPLAND — Playing in its final match before the sectional tournament on Saturday, Jay County’s girls golf team defeated Blackford and Southern Wells at Walnut Creek Golf Course.
The Patriots had a team score of 209. Both the Blackford Bruins and Southern Wells Raiders did not have enough golfers to qualify for a team score.
Senior Abby Saxman led the Patriots with a 49, the fourth time this season she’s shot sub-50 and the second time in as many matches.
Brooke Sanders and Carlie Wickey had scores of 51 and 53 respectively, with Kendra Dodd and Sydney Robbins both scoring 56 to complete the Patriots’ team total.
Rachel Antrim also competed, and she finished with 58.

Tennis shut out
Adams Central spoiled senior night for the Jay County tennis team, shutting out the Patriots 5-0.
JCHS junior Jay Houck took 10 games from Jared Ripley at No. 2 singles, but fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). At No. 1 singles, senior Alex Clark lost to Ben Kahlert 6-0, 6-1.
The Patriots’ other senior, Sok Vormohr, teamed with Peyton Heniser at No. 1 doubles in a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Zach Green and Tanner Roth.
At No. 3 singles, Garrett Rodgers lost both sets to James Weil by a 6-3 score.
Jay County’s No. 2 doubles team of Luke Weaver and Evan Van Cise lost to Joel Mailloux and Chad Biberstine 6-0. 6-1.
The Patriots lost all 10 junior varsity matches too.

Stars beat ’Dogs
NEW HAVEN — The Starfires had a perfect ending to a perfect season.
South Adams’ girls golf team defeated the New Haven Bulldogs by a wide margin Tuesday, 191-276 at Whispering Creek Golf Club.
Senior Sydney Willis earned match medalist with a 6-over par 42. She has earned medalist in every match this season.
Fellow senior Jaci Gorrell was two strokes behind with a 44, and Gorrell’s younger sister Kaiti shot a 48. Amy Schwartz had a 57 to complete the team total for South Adams, which finishes its season 11-0.
Becah Schwartz also competed, and she had a 58.

Chiefs rout Raiders
Gabe Link threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter Tuesday, helping the East Jay Middle School eighth grade football team to a 30-0 clubbing of Southern Wells.
East Jay’s seventh grade squad also won, edging Southern Wells 20-19.
Link connected with Logan Duran for a 25-yard touchdown, and found Noah Arbuckle from 40 yards out to get the Chief offense started.
Jackson Lyons and MaCuly LeMaster both added rushing touchdowns in the second quarter. Lyons scored from the 2-yard line, and LeMaster had a 30-yard scamper.
LeMaster caused a fumble in the third quarter that Levi Peterson scooped up for a touchdown.
Bailey Cox ran for 80 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries for the EJMS seventh graders. R.J. Lennartz added 65 yards on nine carries.
Mitchell Trobridge had two fumble recoveries for the Chief defense, and Rylee Huftel also recovered a loose ball.

FR sweeps Redskins
ST. HENRY, Ohio — The Fort Recovery seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams swept the St. Henry Redskins Tuesday.
The eighth graders won 25-18, 25-22, while the seventh graders had a 25-19, 25-16 victory.
Rachel Acheson led the eighth graders with four kills, and Paige Jutte tallied three kills. Val Muhlenkamp and Olivia Patch both had two kills, and Chloe Showalter had seven assists to go with her 10 service points. Brooke Kahlig and Meghan Jutte had three digs apiece.
Paige Fortkamp recorded three kills to lead the FRMS seventh grade squad. Maria Hartings and Elena Evers both added two. Hope Wendel had a team-high five assists, and Kierra Wendel had four digs. Ava Bubp recorded 13 service points.
