A week after making his collegiate debut, a former Patriot football player was held without measurable stats.
Eric Hemmelgarn, a 2014 Jay County High School graduate, played in his second consecutive game Saturday for the University of Saint Francis football team against Taylor University in Upland.
The redshirt freshman, who had six stops and a pair of tackles for loss in a Sept. 5 win against Anderson, did not record any stats in a 48-42 win for the Cougars, who are now ranked 18th in NAIA.
Hemmelgarn entered as a defensive lineman in the second quarter, and spent most of his time battling with Trojan seniors Patrick Stevens and Chris Chang. The 6-foot, 5-inch, 280-pound Hemmelgarn was kept in check while on the field, and he often had to fight through being double teamed.
He played in about a half dozen defensive series for Saint Francis.
The Cougars (2-1, 1-0 Crossroads League) had a 48-7 lead in the second half, only to see the host Trojans come soaring back, scoring 35 unanswered points. An interception late in the game sealed the victory for the Cougars.
