Jay's Wellman dominates at Yorktown Invitational

YORKTOWN — Inclement weather delayed the start of the Yorktown Invitational.
It also put off Megan Wellman’s dominating performance.
Wellman, a Jay County High School senior, trudged through mud and standing water to beat the field by nearly a minute Saturday.
Yorktown won the team title with a score of 48. Hagerstown was second with 56, and New Castle placed third with 77. Jay County did not have enough runners for a team score.
The Patriot boys were 11th out of 13 teams with a score of 268. Pendleton Heights won with 33. Hagerstown (83) and New Castle (113) were second and third respectively.
Wellman crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 45 seconds, beating Yorktown’s Madelyn Aul by 50 seconds. Fellow senior Kellie Fortkamp was eighth in 21:52, and Erika Kunkler finished in 23:13 for 17th. Vivienne Kunkler was 72nd in 28:53.
Alex LeMaster led the JCHS boys, finishing 47th in 18:40. Freshman Skyler Myers was 52nd in 18:45, and Michael Denney crossed the finish line in 18:51 for 56th.
Travis Barton (60th – 18:55) and Tayler Smeltzer (68th – 19:23) were the fourth and fifth runners respectively.
FR girls seventh
EATON, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s girls cross country team placed seventh Saturday at the Eaton Cross Country Invitational at Fort St. Clair Park.
Covington won the team title with a score of 56. Russia was runner up with 74, and Minster totaled 94 to place third. The Indians had 128.
Fort Recovery’s boys squad totaled 271 points for 10th. Russia scored 76 to edge Botkins by two points. Minster was third with 102.
Chloe Will and Hannah Heitkamp led the Tribe girls, placing 11th and 13th respectively. Will crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 46.48 seconds. Heitkamp was four seconds behind in 20:52.49.
Caitlyn Huelskamp was 34th in 22:28.26, Elise Gehle finished in 22:43.72 for 39th, and Grace Gehle was 52nd in 23:59.7
Travis Sutter and Isaac Siegrist paced the FRHS boys, finishing in 12th (17:51.97) and 24th (18:21.07) respectively. Noah Homan and Cameron Romer finished back-to-back in 81st and 82nd. Homan had a time of 21:50.06, and Romer finished in 21:50.88. Harrison Kaup rounded out the Tribe’s team total, placing 96th in 23:53.89.
Stars sweep invite
BERNE — The Starfires earned a clean sweep.
Not only did they have the individual champions of the invitational they hosted, they won the team titles too.
South Adams’ cross country teams dominated the competition Saturday to win both the boys and girls championships of the South Adams Invitational.
The Starfire boys took five of the top eight spots to finish with a score of 27. Adams Central was second with 74, and Bluffton totaled 76 for third.
South Adams’ girls scored 49 points, beating runner-up Union City by 32. Randolph Southern totaled 99 for third.
Junior Bailey McIntire won in 16 minutes, 24.75 seconds, beating the field by 67 seconds.
Daniel Steffen, Wyatt Miller, McGerran Clouser and David Steffen occupied the fifth through eighth spots. Daniel Steffen had a time of 17:50.26, Miller finished in 17:52.29, Clouser crossed the line in 18:05.64 and David Steffen psoted a time of 18:08.84.
In the girls’ race, SAHS sophomore Olivia Von Gunten crossed the finish line in 19:55.57, edging Canterbury’s Kate White by 1.27 seconds.
South Adams’ Kara Seffernick was fourth in 21:07.82, Acacia Anderson finished 14th in 22:08.62 and Eliza Harruff placed 17th in 22:36.79. Katelin Hawbaker rounded out the SAHS team total by finishing 20th in 22:45.58.
East Jay girls win
SELMA — Miranda Alig placed sixth Saturday, helping the East Jay Middle School girls cross country team to the championship of the Selma Invitational.
The Chiefs scored 96 points, edging runner-up Delta by one. Yorktown was third in the 15-team tournament with a total of 108.
East Jay’s sixth and seventh grade boys team scored 57 points to finish second behind Monroe Central (50). Selma was third with 72 points.
The Chief eighth grade boys scored 106 to place sixth. Selma won with 58, Daleville was second with 75 and Liberty Christian placed third with 94.
Alig crossed the finish line in 13 minutes, 16 seconds, to finish 54 seconds behind race winner Elizabeth Reece of Yorktown. Lindy Wood was 15th with a time of 13:34, Cheyenne Liette placed 28th in 14:17, one second ahead of teammate Lita Chowning. Jocelyn Reed was 30th in 14:20.
Mitchell Winner led the sixth and seventh grade Chiefs, finishing second in 11:38. Flint Schmiesing was seventh in 12:09, and Xavier Myers finished eighth in 12:8. Gaven Muhlenkamp (13th – 12:31) and Dustin Harris (27th – 13:14) completed the Chiefs’ team score.
Mason Winner and Brayden Sprunger placed fourth and sixth respectively for the East Jay eighth graders. Winner crossed the finish line in 11:42, and Spurnger was 13 seconds behind him.
Dylan Knapschafer and Cristian Marentez were 18th and 35th respectively, and Crosby Heniser finished 50th.
