HUNTINGTON — The Jay County High School softball team lost for the second time in as many days Wednesday, falling to the Huntington North Vikings 11-1 in six innings.
Jay County (0-2) got on the board in the top of the third inning when Emily Corn hit an RBI single. It was her fourth hit and second RBI of the season after a three-hit performance Tuesday against Fort Recovery.
The Vikings, a former sectional opponent of the Patriots before JCHS was dropped to Class 3A this season, responded with eight runs in the bottom of the third. They tacked on one more in the fifth and two in the sixth to complete the run-rule victory.
Rachel Antrim (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up 10 hits and striking out two.
Senior Gabby Hart and freshman Kensey Litton had two hits apiece to pace the Patriot offense. Litton, who also had three stolen bases, notched her first two career hits.
Kady Finnerty also had a hit, with Sam Twigg and Katie Carpenter recording the first hit of their respective careers.
SA tennis takes opener
WABASH — The South Adams girls tennis team opened its season Tuesday with a 4-1 victory over Northfield.
The Starfires (1-0) swept the doubles matches, with Riley Leichty and Kylea Pierce teaming to beat Jessie Sears and Kendra Stout 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Breanna Potts and Haley Gerber knocked off Courtney Stapleton and Katie Pefley at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, Julia Grabau defeated Hope Unger 6-3, 6-3, and Caralie Farlow outlasted Abigail Poole at No. 3 singles 7-5, 7-6.
The only victory for the Norse came at No. 1 singles. Jordan Bratch defeated Brittany Potts 6-1, 6-1.
South Adams’ junior varsity team won 6-0. Virginia Lagos, Autumn Von Gunten and Sydney Pierce each won their singles matches.
Fatima Sandoval and Katrina Fosnaugh won at No. 1 doubles. Riley Thompson and Lara Schwartz earned a victory at No. 2 doubles and the No. 3 doubles tandem of Jade Farlow and Cassie Yoder won their first match as well.

Pitchers dazzle in win
BERNE — Justin Nussbaum and Grant Besser combined to pitch a one-hit shutout Wednesday as the South Adams baseball team defeated the Fort Wayne Canterbury Cavaliers 1-0.
Nussbaum surrendered one hit over four innings of work, striking out six Cavaliers and only walking one. Besser tossed three innings of relief, earning his first career victory. He struck out eight of the nine batters he faced.
Jayden Dull provided the only offense the Starfires (2-0) needed, ripping an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nussbaum added a pair of hits including a double, and Corbin Blomeke also tallied a hit.
Canterbury’s Ben Axel suffered the loss. He scattered four this over six innings, struck out six and walked one while allowing one earned run.
