The Abbys lost their first three matches of the season.
Now they have one in the win column.
Seniors Abby Reier and Abby Saxman won their first doubles match of the year Tuesday but it wasn’t enough as the Jay County High School girls tennis team lost to the Frankton Eagles, 3-2.
The Abbys battled Madelyn Walls and Morgan Rogers. They split the first two sets by matching 6-2 scores, but the Patriot duo outlasted the Eagles in the third set, 7-6 (10-8), for their first win.
Jay County’s other victory came from Megan Johnson (2-2) at No. 2 singles. The junior defeated Sherrie Riser 6-1, 6-7 (5-7) 6-2.
Kyra Braun fell to 2-2 on the season with her 6-2, 6-2 loss to Emma Noble at No. 1 singles. Francine Muhlenkamp made her varsity debut at No. 3 singles and dropped her match to Annie Gates 6-4, 6-1. The Patriots’ No. 2 doubles team of Audrey Dirksen and Kayla Dirksen (1-3) fell to Emily Shafer and Chelsym Basey 6-4, 7-5.
The Patriot junior varsity team won, 6-2. Earning singles victories were Cassie Reno, Sydney Baughman, Katy Hamilton and Brittani Snell. Baughman and Hamilton earned a win in their doubles match, and Betsy Muhlenkamp joined Emily Reier for a doubles victory as well.

FR rally falls short
ROCKFORD, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s baseball team had a rally fall short Tuesday in a 9-7 loss to the Parkway Panthers.
The Indians (10-4, 1-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score at 6-6, but the Panthers (5-5, 2-1 MAC) roughed up reliever Cade Wendel to the tune of three runs to take a 9-6 lead. Fort Recovery got one back in the top of the seventh, but weren’t able to even the score a second time.
Jackson Hobbs had had one hit, walked twice and drove in three runs. Will Homan had two hits and scored twice, with Jacob Homan, Hunter Boughman, Ben Homan and Wendel each adding singles.
Nick Thwaits was 2-for-4 in his season debut after sitting out 13 games following his transfer from Marion Local.
Thwaits started, giving up six runs — four earned — on eight hits. He struck out six and walked three in five innings. Wendel allowed three runs, one of which was earned, on four hits.
Big fifth dooms Tribe
FORT RECOVERY — A nine-run fifth inning was too much to overcome for the Fort Recovery softball team in a 14-4 loss Tuesday to the Parkway Panthers.
Fort Recovery (1-12, 0-2 MAC) trailed 3-0 heading into the fourth before the Panthers (7-1, 2-1 MAC) broke the game open by capitalizing on four FRHS errors.
The Indians scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth on singles from Chelsea Timmerman and Kasey Vogel.

Devin Post was 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Indians. Taylor Thien, Chloe Metzger, Emily Hart and Taylor Grisez each had hits.
Timmerman took the loss, allowing 14 runs — one earned — on 14 hits. She struck out four and walked three.

Star track splits
BERNE — South Adams’ boys and girls track teams split a meet with the Woodlan Warriors on Tuesday.
The SAHS girls won 11 events for a 94-29 victory. The Starfire boys lost 69-53.
Sophomores Addie Wanner and Olivia Von Gunten were both dual winners for the SAHS girls. Wanner won the high jump and 100-meter hurdles, with Von Gunten finishing first in the 1,600 and 800 runs.
Also earning victories were Emma Rosswurm (long jump), Kylie Grabau (discus), Ashley LeFever (400 dash), Kara Seffernick (3,200 run), Caroline Kloepper (200 dash) and Cindy In’t Groen (shot put).
South Adams also won the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
Drew LeFever and Bailey McIntire accounted for five boys victories. McIntire was first in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 runs, while LeFever threw the furthest in discus and shot put.
The Starfire boys also won the 4x800 relay.

Late burst downs SA
MONROEVILLE — The South Adams softball team gave up three late runs in an 8-7 loss Tuesday to the Heritage Patriots.
South Adams (4-2, 0-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) scored two runs in each of the second, third and fifth innings to lead 6-5 after five, but a three-run sixth by the Patriots gave the home team the lead for good. The Starfires scratched across a run in the top of the seventh but weren’t able to get any more.
Katelin Augsburger had a double, a single and drove in two runs. Abby Myers and Casi Evans both had two hits and an RBI. Tori Raugh also had a single.
Augsburger suffered the loss, allowing four unearned runs on four hits while striking out eight in four innings. Morgan Alberson started but lasted two innings. She gave up four runs — three earned — on three hits and walked four.
The Starfires host Randolph Southern at 5 p.m. tonight.
